Looks like it could be great. The official site says they plan to have this done by August 2014 apparently, thats not too long for what the site says is "extensive" work! Maybe you guys just work faster than us Brits when it comes to construction :P

Construction moves pretty fast in Arizona. One day you're driving by an empty field and the next day they are building houses on it.

Looks nice.

Hope the ice surface is good though. That's what makes the real difference.

Looks like it will be all new...Got this from their Facebook page.

Wow, what a difference a day makes. The construction crews are hard at the demo at our Chandler Ice Den and the rink boards and glass are just about down. The ice is being melted so we can start tearing up the sand, drop new pipe and set the concrete floors.
Here's some sneak peak renderings to give you and idea of what to expect when we re-open in August. How about that new restaurant package, 18 Degrees Express? You'll also notice we're adding seating on the West Rink

What will be interesting is the costs to play hockey there for the youth of the east valley.
Now Jim Rogers is sinking 30K into the gilbert rink. I can tell you the ice has been terrible all year playing there. The ice is like velcro.
But all that really matters to me as a coach is the ice surface. If it's improved at Gilbert I will stick there.
The 3 million dollars in renovations at chandler will be recouped with higher fees to play hockey. At least that's what I would imagine.
I dont care about fancy restaurants or lobbies.

From what I can tell and from what I have read the ice will be much much much better.

I am sure many more people will eat 18 degrees than the old pizza place. The restaurant is great for viewing parties or a place for the players to go after or before a game (adult and youth players). I know when I played games at the original Ice Den I always got some food from the restaurant after the game.

The pro shop is way better than the karate studio that took up residence there when behind the mask left because polar ice raised the price of their lease. Just hope they teach the staff how to sharpen a damn skate! Chandler Polar Ice was the worst for skate sharpens in my opinion.

A Fitness studio could be used by moms that take their children to practice and want to get some exercise in. Or players that want a specialized routine with a trainer to improve their game.

It's also nice that some seating have been added to the what used to be called South Pole rink (or was it north). Wish I still lived closer to that rink.

I hope prices stay the same and the new owner recoups money just by operating a good rink and not by jacking up prices.

The more Ice Dens, the better. A quality place for kids to go skate. Should be one in every economically viable spot in the Valley IMO.

Yea me to. I played hockey there a lot in high school so its good to see it get a facelift...and implants...and a better personality. Hope they improve the showers a bit to...

I wish they'd make bigger referee rooms, but it doesn't look like that's happening. Those places are tiny. At least they have a shower, though. Oceanside has no shower for the refs.

They gave the refs a modified closet..haha I have never seen it..I know the changing rooms are a good size.

It's the same at every (now former) Polar rink. Barely enough room for four people, and a shower stall. And if you're the unlucky official who sits by the door, expect to have your bag/feet/skates hit by it every time it opens. Also, if it's between games and it's a new crew coming on for the next one, now you've got 4-8 officials trying to cram into that tiny area. It's really annoying.

Ice Den's referee rooms are pretty small too. Arcadia has the best officials' area actually. They actually don't have a dedicated "referee room" so they send the officials into a fairly spacious room that contains benches, a large open shower, employee lockers, time clock for rink employees, etc. Then if you ask for it, while you're on the ice you can lock your stuff in one of the lockers, or some of the seats open up and have a lock. Considering the neighborhood that Arcadia is in I tend to take advantage of this.

I wonder if the Ice Den ownership group is interested in buying the Gilbert Polar Ice, as well.

As I understand it, the owner(s) of Arcadia now own Gilbert (and Peoria too?); I'm playing in 2 leagues in Gilbert over the summer while Chandler's being renovated, and notice that the employees there are now wearing shirts with the same red skate blade logo as Arcadia's.

I thought Arcadia bought the one in Peoria and Gilbert has not been bought by anyone. But looking into this it looks like they bought both.

Sounds like AZ Ice will improve their facilities but not 3 million dollar improvement.

“You can spend a ton of money making a lot of bells and whistles, but that’s not going to improve the skating industry,†Rogers said. “I can go and put $3 million into it, but then the cost of everything is going to go way up. Our goal is to get more people playing, not fewer.â€

(After 14 years of steady decline at Polar Chandler, I don't mind paying a little for some bells and whistles. it will be interesting to see if Gilbert can retain any adult customers when Chandler re-opens)

If its cheaper..I would go there..it is also the closest to me. My reason for going would br to play hockey and to stay fit. If the ice is good that is all that really matters...oh yea and if the guy can sharpen a damn skate! that frustrates me.
