I will never understand why he held out in the first place. He had no leverage, only really established himself as an NHL'er during the last 15 games last year, and held out for a couple hundred thousand $ (which he didn't get), ends up missing a couple days in camp and signs for his qualifying offer and still only gets a 2-way. ****ing what?

At least he is signed now and can get to camp.

For a fringe player like Mangiapane, a couple hundred thousand is huge. He isn't a millionaire and he doesn't have any guarantees.

Think of how much an extra $200k would make a difference in your life.

He is very close to be a legit nhler. 200k is nothing in that situation.

But I think his agent screwed up. May have been able to get a one way if signed earlier.

If Calgary was trying to send him down I would trade a 3rd for him. He was very impressive last season.
I'm not saying they will. I yhink he is very much in the thick of things now that he is back. He's up against stiff competition and assuming he can earn a spot at RW is just a hope. If he can that's great. If Looch plays 4LW I can see Mangi at 3LW asduming he beats out Dube.

Never understand why he was holding out. He had zero leverage and hasnt even played 75 games in the NHL.

Mangiapane has lots of time to make the big bucks, he showed last year he belongs in the NHL and there's zero chance he wouldn't be snapped up if he ever went on waivers.

It took the Flames almost the entire summer to sign a guy to a two-way contract for an amount not much more than the league minimum? Somebody is eating some serious crow here. Suspect it's the player and his agent.

Hopefully Andrew learned from this and gets rid of Mr Winter, this is an agent who's been trending down for years now and we know why!

Close being the keyword, he isn't a legit NHLer yet. He could be out of the league within a year or two or he could be in it the next decade.

All it takes is one injury and he's f***ed I totally see why he'd try to squeeze more out of it.

Good for both the player and team. It’s only 1 year and there should be a good opportunity for Mangi to really prove he belongs and get a good amount on his contract next season.

I was hoping Edmonton could steal him for a pick if you weren’t going to get him signed.

He was risking his roster spot by holding out meaning he could have been making AHL money or nothing at all.

His agent should be fired for giving him horrible advice. Mangiapane should be at camp trying to prove that the last part of last year wasn't a fluke and that he deserves a full time spot on the roster this year, he has 13 career points. He potentially could have had his career halted for such stupidity. I blame his agent 100% for this crap. I'm all for players getting their money, but come on.

That isn't as possible as far as I know
It is possible, all RFAs can be offer sheeted. Only young players w/o contract that are ineligible ineligible to be offer sheeted are guys like McAvoy who don't have 3 years of service when their ELC expires, because they don't have enough experience to even qualify as a RFA so they are 10.2c status (which is just the section number of the CBA that pertains to it). I do believe both Bennett and Gaudreau were 10.2c players as well

He didn’t really have much leverage. I never understood why he’d hold out for so little. If Tkachuk is a no-show Mangiapane will have a huge opportunity.
The difference between 715k and 850k is pretty damn big for a guy in his position. We're not talking about a top line player foregoing half a million off of his 7 million AAV.

I understand the argument for taking the QO and just further establishing himself if possible, but his ask was also not unreasonable. I think the only reason he didn't get it is the fact that the Flames have to pinch every available penny in an attempt to re-sign Tkachuk.

If he has a good year this year, next summer will be ugly for Calgary

If Kylington and Ras prove to be good players, the flames can add 3 cheap d-men (the other being Vali) and move out harmonic and Brodie and clean $9 mil in space.

Even then I agree it could be ugly next year.

When it comes to negotiating RFA contracts, Treliving is one of the better GMs in the league.

It's not really "so little" when you consider a one-way vs a two-way contract. If Mangiapane is demoted to the AHL, he will make a fraction of what he would if he managed to get a one-way contract.

I completely agree with this, but the point was that you were implying that a ~200k was chump change. It may be in the future, but right now it isn't for him.

I think next year will be different as he has arbitration rights. I also suspect he may have a new agent, because that is who Mangiapne should be upset with, not the team.
