Honestly been thinking the same thing a lot lately

It's for shooting, comes from the flex that the stick provides. Close quarters it's not as useful as a stiffer flex shorter stick. It's always been that way with him, he'll have a higher shot percentage from outside the sector than he has from the crease. That's why it's a bit of a waste when he is in front of the net.

Jody specifically mentioned last night during one of our PP opportunities (I don't remember which) that it seemed to him like Laine kept looking at his stick and testing the flex after every shot, like it wasn't accomplishing what he wanted from it.

I know. Maybe he should consider changing his stick along with his game.
