My guess is the choice was retain 50% or not move him and retain 100%. So they are essentially saving 50% of his remaining salary.

This trade season is a lot of what ifs - what if Nyquist hadn't gotten hurt, what if the NHL had not issued that memo (that scared all the teams using LTIR), what if Boston hadn't backed out of the Gavy deal... Only Korpi has a normal trade situation. Oh well.

I mean, they're 7 points ahead of Calgary, who is the last team out. Nashville and St. Louis are selling. It's a 9-team race in the west, and maybe only 8 if Calgary starts to sell a few guys.
