#CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen sounded like he didn't expect much today in free agency, though told they've spoken with D Paul Martin.

Unless Paul Martin takes a friendly deal to win a cup (like ehrhoff last year) hes not coming here.

Yes I would expect the conversation to begin with Jarmo saying 'Paul we think you'd be a great fit, and I think we're a great opportunity for you both to win and to be a mentor, but I understand you may have a dollar amount or term in mind that we're not prepared to meet.'

Richards would know Martin from Team USA, yes? He's also a family guy - obvious zoo reference here.

Ehrhoff also played the right side despite being a LHD. I'd take either on a cap-friendly two-year deal.

@DarrenDreger: Veteran d-man Paul Martin has a number of options ranging from 1 yr to multi year term. Solid player.

So I guess Martin has a ton of interest and Sekera might be going to EDM as well as a potential Tarasenko offer sheet.

Welcome to FA Frenzy

SJ is believed to be a leading contender for Paul Martin. #TSN

Paul Martin est très en demande. Les Blue Jackets sont très agressifs et souhaitent aussi mettre la main sur lui. Il faut aussi regarder SJ.

Paul Martin is very much in demand. The Blue Jackets are very aggressive and also want to get their hands on him. We must also look at SJ.

I could be a homer but I think if Martin TRULY wants to attempt to win a cup, we're a better option than SJ.

Things change fast on UFA Day. Now hearing SJ no longer a top contender for Paul Martin. But COL will be in hard on Francois Beauchemin.

Is this getting real?

I fondly remember Martin assisting on nearly every single Pens goal against us in the playoffs. He was outstanding that series. I didn't know he was 34, but he was the one FA defenseman I wanted us to take a run at. He'd fit in nicely. Get it done with short term Jarmo.

I'm throwing out numbers so I could be way off but out these 3 options, which is best?

1) 1 year for $6.5 million

2) 2 years for $10 million ($5 mil cap hit)

3)3 years for $12.75 million ($4.25 cap hit)

Keep in mind he is 34.

Figured he'd want a likely final NHL contract. Something like 4 years for $18M or 5 years for $22M

Interesting. If there was a D that I would want, it's him. Concerned about term, but we'll see.

Assuming we sign Calvert around 2 mill & letestu at 2 that would leave about 9 to split between Saad & Martin. Then we're right at cap with no flexibility. Something's not going to happen.
