The slumping Dallas Cowboys are poised to make a change at quarterback.

NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Tuesday that the Cowboys plan to start Matt Cassel in Week 7 when they return from their bye against the New York Giants, according to a team source. Jason Garrett contacted both quarterbacks to let them know Cassel will start, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport added. ESPN first reported the news.

Cassel's experience in multiple-check systems, and his background having played in a similar offense under Norv Turner in Minnesota, will allow Jason Garrett and Scott Linehan to open up the offense. While Weeden did fine in spot duty, he's still very much a spread-offense quarterback that struggles with progressions and full-field reads, Breer added.

The news comes two days after a 30-6 loss to the Patriots, the Cowboys' third straight setback since Brandon Weeden took over for an injured Tony Romo.

Weeden didn't play terribly in his three starts. He posted an 85.7 passer rating and completed 71 percent of his passes (64-for-91) with one touchdown and two interceptions. But Weeden averaged just 6.55 yards per attempt while piloting a Dallas offense that has been significantly less explosive without Romo and Dez Bryant on the field.

So the offense was significantly less explosive with Weeden so the Cowboys solution is to go with an even worse option at QB in Cassel?

Desperation setting in

Cassel can't be worse than staredown, checkdown Weeden, can he?

And yes, desperation is kicking in. The offense has suffered under Weeds

You can plug in any other position and still get something out of them. Quarterbacks need reps and practice in an offense to fully understand the playcalls and plays. This is where Dallas misses a bellcow back they can lean on that can open up everyone else. Expecting a back up QB to win you games is unrealistic.

Jerry bought the hype from his offensive line again. Shades of the 90's when he thought any back could run behind that wall.

Granted, Murray priced himself out of the equation for the Cowboys, but going with a panty thief, a bust and Dunbar(basically a slot receiver) was a recipe for disaster.

If you were ranking NFL QB's Cassel would be immediately followed by Weeden on the list, that is pretty much how big of an upgrade this is.

Well... Cassel sucks just like Weeden, but at least Cassel provides some entertainment by making a few plays.

If the choice is lose with Weeden checking down over and over or lose with Cassel making some sweet throws to both teams, give me Cassel.

The only real poor throw was interception #2. Williams ran a **** route on #1 and DRC made a great play on #3.
