I guess this is as good of a place as any to ask, what is going on with the canes special teams? Their 5v5 stats are very good but the special teams are terrible. They’ve given up 9 powerplay goals in 27 chances, which is dead last in the NHL. They’ve had 2 powerplay goals in 30 attempts, also dead last. Plus they’ve given up 1 short handed. How can a team so strong offensively 5v5, have so little success on the pp? Just unlucky?

Lies, damn lies and stats. Watching their game against the Avs were you at any point worried that we might lose the game? Sure they took a lot of shots and created some chances that Grubauer had to stop, but the vast majority of those shots weren't dangerous at all. plus, unlike the Kings who also liked to put the puck on the net from all areas of the ice they generate almost no net-front presence, nor do they go aggressively after 2nd chance rebounds allowing the d to control the crease and maintain clear sight lines to the shooter. Hard to score goals in today's NHL taking shots from bad angles with no in-the-face pressure from the forwards on the goalie. They are a perfect example of how piss poor of a stat Corsi is if you don't apply any context to it.

No, but I also think that, had the goalies been switched out, we would’ve been in trouble. Grubauer made some big saves and McBackup didn’t. That plus special teams is what really decided the game.

So all the “washed up jobbers” consists of two people, one of which is 30 years old and is currently playing his best hockey since coming to Carolina?

Excellent analysis. Very good.
No those were just the players people know. You can add guys like de Haan, van Riemsdyk and Ferland to the list as well. Although Ferland will most likely be carried to a "breakout" season by Aho feeding him all those prime chances.

And don't be expecting too much from Staal. His Days of scoring 50+ Points seasons are behind him...

So those guys are “washed up jobbers”, too?

That's 10 % of the season. Things like shots on goals won't fluctuate much beyond this Point. Especially since Carolina has had over 40 shots in 6 of the games and have kept up this average despite having an average record overall.

well thats not true. a couple injuries to puck moving defensemen will drastically slow down on offense.

Not totally suprised, they move the puck beautifully, even last year. If their finishing ability catches up they could be a good team. They remind me of Nashville.

Yeah pretty much. Every one of those guys have been in the League several years already and are too old to lump in with the younger guys on the team that still have potential to become way better.

It feels like they are overdoing it. They have no patience to let a situation develop because they throw the puck towards net the first chance they have.

Special teams is killing them right now.

5v5 GF/60: 3rd best in the NHL right now
5v5 GA/60: 11th best in the NHL right now

PP GF/60: 31st in the NHL right now
PK GA/60: 31st in the NHL right now

Absolutely brutal "special" teams.

Closed.

The thread can reopen when the thread starter PMs me a reputable statistical review that supports the claim above.
