Of all coaches, Rod would probably be one of the better ones to have that conversation. He doesn’t come off as a guy who will blow smoke up your ass, but he doesn’t seem cruel either. He had plenty of bad performances as a player, was around plenty of goalies who melted down, and of course as a coach he has been around Canes goalies at their worst. Seems like he’d look you in the eye, tell you it wasn’t good enough, remind you that it’s just start #1 of many in your career, and send you on your way feeling like a pro.

I mean you don't even have to be cruel about it. Simply tell the kid "hey, that wasn't your night, we both know it. We need to get you as many reps as possible and the best place for that right now is Chicago rather than having you riding the pine on the taxi squad."

I get what he’s saying, but look where Jack is in the crease. He’s not going to stop NHL shooters there.

Bad positioning, sure, but it was a legit snipe shot. You shoot based on what the goalie give you which was a lot here but of all the goals scored against tonight I’m not throwing him under the bus for this one.

1, 2, and 4 are forgivable or flukes. The others though…

How about rising to the occasion for the youngster?

It’s a defensive breakdown for sure. The picture says it all.

But Walt is making that point with a pic that also shows the goalie sitting way too far back in his crease, inviting the shooter to pick his corner. Is it all on Jack, definitely not… but there’s a reason Andersen has been making saves in those situations all season and not getting lit up like this.

I think this is the perfect example of what I'm seeing/feeling.

I don't think laf is this bad. I don't think he's ready either. Mostly I think he's struggling mentally with leaving his college in the middle of the season and the pressure of that and everything that's being said becasue of it. He's been out of position and almost fell skating backwards in his crease early in the game. Lets get him to the A or E and let him reset

So an aside.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to find/removed an old (30 years?) barbed wire fence? I found some in my yard today, and while I knew it was there before, it seems like its going around the entire border, and it makes me a bit worried with kids and pets running around

I mean its not that he's that far back. You draw a line from where the puck is to where Laf is positioned, and he's so far out of position that half his body is outside the net, and the half that is covering the net is stick side. Not ideal

I’d be surprised if we ever see that 24 your old goalie in a cane uniform again.

The team is in its SC window and with Russian goalie + others available he won’t get the opportunity again.

Couple thoughts:

In the big scheme of things, I wonder if the LaF signing was realistically designed as much as emergency support for the Wolves as for the Canes? With at least one game in The Show as bait to sign (and maybe a "raffle ticket" shot for the Canes)?

I'm wondering if the Ayres game maybe gave the Borg an inflated sense of optimism that the Canes D might be able to support a goalie even as raw as LaF for a game or two? (oops)

That was brutal for LaF, but at least now he'll forever be able to say that he was an NHL goalie. From the look of things, if he hadn't taken advantage of this opportunity you've got to wonder if he'd have otherwise ever made it into an NHL game? Plus it put a couple bucks into his pocket.

Sometimes shit just doesn't work out; onward and upward.

I just think it was that Raanta was showing to have injury concerns yet again and that we had a chance to sign what was one of the better goalie prospects in the NCAA to give us another option. It hasn't worked out so far (in an extremely small sample size) but I understand the logic.
