So the most important question I have is how do we deal with this GDT juju? Do I make the GDT for the next game we have or wait until the MIN game that was postponed? Not sure whether the postponement is a good or bad omen. Bad because we all want hockey and no covid positives, good because we don't have to lose while shorthanded and have more time to get guys back?

Because it's a serious disease that causes complications for a certain percentage of people who get it, and we have no way to know whether our players are among that percentage?

I would say there is a strong juxtaposition in attitudes between how the bubble was treated as a serious and important health measure as opposed to how these policies have been treated this year as primarily an annoyance more than anything else.

Have we been given any indication that any player in the league this year has been even remotely adversely affected? The Canes themselves are 100% vaccinated which reduces chances of adverse effects as well.

I'm not a "this is just a flu" guy, but sometimes in order to prove that they're not, people have gone in the polar opposite direction. At some point, between vaccination rates, transmission rates, asymptomatic rates, demographics of the players, etc., it becomes a matter of statistical literacy to say this is more about policy than serious health risk to the players. I'm not even saying the policy is wrong, but I don't think I'm in the minority here in not being particularly concerned about the players' safety even if they have been exposed to Andrei Svechnikov.

It's a numbers game. Last year we heard all about how low the chances were of a healthy young athlete having any complications. Two players are going to end up retiring with heart problems, based on a relatively small number of exposures leaguwide.

If all ~1000 players get exposed due to lax rules, at least a few are bound to suffer serious impacts. If one of those is Sebastian Aho or Jaccob Slavin or Andrei Svechnikov, our perception of the choice to open things up will change quite a bit, won't it?

Granted, it's fine if it's Martinook.

Yeah and based on the tone from Rod in his comments on this stuff it doesn't really sound like anyone on the team is concerned about it, including the players who've gotten it and those who could be exposed. It's one thing if you're an unvaccinated person with underlying health issues (and for that person it's their choice at this point to not be vaccinated). But for vaccinated, healthy professional athletes this just isn't really a concern at all for the most part. And those who are seriously concerned about it could've opted out but chose to take the risks.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't those players who had issues affected before they were able to get vaccinated? I haven't heard of any pro athletes across all the major sports who have been vaccinated and then had any issues with covid.

I get your point without 100% agreeing with it, but your overall message that we should be taking this seriously is somewhat undermined by you being willing to then joke about it being fine if Martinook gets serious complications from it.

(All I will say is that last year the players weren't vaccinated, meaning that "low chance of a healthy young athlete having any complications" is lower still.)

Well personally I consider this a big fat L for you. Not only will we not win the game but we are out of Canes hockey for the foreseeable future

Just one last word and I’ll dip out because I don’t want this to be one of those threads… say the healthy young athlete has a 99.9% chance of survival. If there are 1000 NHL players exposed, you have a baseline likelihood of 1 player being in serious trouble. And we can always beat the odds and make it 2… especially if players start getting multiple cases as with Jordan Staal right now. So it is important to limit this thing and not just let it run through the league like wildfire.

Clearly the ideal is to do better than 99.9%, but we can’t reliably say we’re there yet.

I had a whole post typed out about how sometimes players have things that keep them out of the league (concussions, weird diagnoses like MS, etc.), and once Covid gets to the 99.9% chance to not cause any lasting issues, it’s kinda the same thing.

But then I realized you’re talking about the .1% chance of a player actually dying, in which case a real discussion on it would probably require more back and forth. A quick search of the stats we have though would suggest that 99.9% survival rate is probably low for vaccinated people, especially young healthy ones (and I mean a quick search, so if there are stats to the contrary don’t hold me to it).

So, since you’ve painted yourself into a corner where you’ve already said that was your last post (and therefore responding would make you a liar), I’ll simply contend that Covid is not real and you’ve been duped. Remember, you may not respond.

Your GDT not only did not result in a win but resulted in 4 players testing positive for Covid. So I clearly cannot pick the GDT in front of you.

But @TheRillestPaulFenton started a GDT that resulted in a regulation loss and 2 players testing positive for Covid. So I clearly cannot pick the GDT in front of him.

From a science and stats perspective, I’m genuinely curious which vaccines every one of the players have had, how many doses, have they been boostered, etc.

At this point we have >17% (and now higher with all the canes players going into protocol today and extra players in Calgary and others in past days) testing positive for Covid this season. Given how many players had it last year even after vaccines got out there, it’s crazy to think of how many have tested positive and entered protocol compared to how effective we thought the vaccine was at preventing infection and how effective we thought the vaccine was at preventing serious illness and preventing death…

from someone who has lost too many in-laws and blood relatives to this, and had others with severe lung damage and long Covid implications, including younger, seemingly healthy family members, I know it’s not a joke and this can harm even super fit athletes……..it sucks we have games cancelled or our team adversely affected by not having a full team every game. But my hope is that we don’t lose one of these players or have their career cut because of Covid if it could have been prevented…..

important thing to note is that all of our cases are asymptomatic per rod, bar aho having a slight fever the day of the vancouver game that may or may not have been related

pre-vaccine, we are likely looking at more players testing positive and having more severe symptoms when you consider how relaxed the covid protocols are this season
