Bear has been scratched for 3 games straight after there being rumors of contract extension negotiations with the Hurricanes earlier this season, and Chatfield extends first. Maeks u think.

Seriously though, Chatfield looked good before Omicron/injuries.

He’s been good in Carolina
Yeah he moves the needle 0% but if he plays on a team that's already good he can be carried.
He has zero offense and he's not going to shut down a top line unless he is paired with an ace.

he looked capable in a bottom pair role earlier this year albeit not in a lot of games before he got hurt, at worst he should make a decent #7 next year

This guy looked absolutely terrible for the Canucks, but I'm happy for him that he's finding his game in the Canes organization.

His contract is a $765k cap hit so it can be completely buried in the A with no charge to Carolina. Next season is a 2 way deal. $225k in the A. Year 2 is a 1 way deal. But again, no cap charge to keep him in the A. Just costs the Canes money.

if he can carve out an Alex Biega career as a depth defender, who has made $5.2 mill per cap friendly over his pro career that’s good for him.

That's fine. He wasn't signed to provide offense or shut down top line. It's a 2 way deal that pays him the minimum at the NHL level; and he's signed for the AHL and as a depth guy when needed. If he's anywhere near the Canes top 4, it's because they've had a ton of injuries.

In his limited play in that role when the Canes were down a bunch of guys with Covid, he handled that role well.
