Big tier break at #5, but at least our second tier of prospects are much more promising now than a couple years ago. A lot of this is due to the slow graduation rate, but it’s at least nice to feel like we might actually make it almost close to #10 without resorting to long-shots or guys who max out as fringe players.

Gonna go with Protas at 5, but Iorio or Brent Johnson could also work.

I like Nardella, but he's already 25, and he's got a ton of competition for a LD spot with Fehervary and AA. If he can put on a really strong camp and leapfrog one of them, he might have a shot. But he doesn't really have a whole lot of time left and no clear path in Washington, so if he does translate to the NHL it seems likely it will be with another organization. Fingers crossed he can either carve out a role for himself in DC or do enough for himself that the Caps can get value for him via trade.

Protas here pretty easily. Nardella is cool and all but idk if he's gonna carve out a nhl role for himself (here at least, we have 5 NHL ready dmen although kempny hasnt played in like 2 years), if he plays well in Hershey we might be able to use him/get decent value out of him. As for Protas, he had a solid year in the KHL and played a lot of games, hopefully he can put together what he's learned so far and breakout in a full time top 9 C spot in Hershey and maybe even top 6

None of the D left are very exciting prospects. Most are going to be lucky to stick as 3rd pairing guys including our first two picks this year.

Iorio looked great at the Canada Summer camps. I think he has a lot of potential IMO.

To me the strong play Protas and Leason had playing together in the WHL puts Leason next. Those two are a sum-of-the-parts-greater-than thing.

I think you’re pretty universally overrating those forward prospects. Trineyev is intriguing, but very much a project player still that may never be able to translate his offensive play to the top levels of professional hockey. His offensive numbers (or lack thereof) in the VHL are excusable for being a teenager on a low scoring men’s team, but it’s not like he was lapping the field in the MHL against his peers.
I don’t see anything game breaking in Leason’s game. He recovered nicely from a rough first professional season, but his only real plus asset at the NHL level is his height. If he continues to improve, he could work his way into being a 3rd liner.
I don’t think AJF or Malentsyn are “safe” beyond being fringe players. Malentsyn gives you the hustle you want if you have a spare energy spot, but he’s unlikely to displace any other player to win that spot. Moreover, he just missed an entire year with an Achilles injury.

Maybe Iorio or Johnson don’t end up being more than 3rd pairing guys, but I don’t think that forward group is particularly safe bets for NHL careers, especially not beyond 4th line or depth duty.

The TopDownHockey prospect model has Pilon for this next spot. He's the most likely player behind McMichael to become an NHL star in the Capitals' prospect pool, and the 5th most likely to become an NHL regular.

I tend to think Bogdan is a younger version Leason and is very similar. But I also have not really seen Bogdan play at all except for highlight clips posted on here.

Is that a right or wrong assumption?
