Caps 4 on 3 PP

Anyone else hate their set up when the caps have a 4 on 3 PP?

They essentially set up like a box.

It's pretty easy to defend, IMO. Especially when the forwards on the sides are under the hashmarks, like they were a little bit last night. The main reason being they don't have anyone in front of the net creating havoc for the opposing goalie/Dman.

They should set up as a diamond when they have a 4 on 3 PP.

Put a big body like Penner in front of the net. Backstrom or a left hander on his offside on one hashmark and Ovie on the other (that way they can one time it from their offside) and have Green or Carlson up at the top.

Anyone else agree?

I only remember one prior 4-on-3 in OT and it was against Detroit this season. Ovie buried the game-winner. I did think it was odd last night that Ovie started the PP on the right side of the box as they tried to get Green the shot.

We seem to struggle at anything but 5 on 4. Even 6 on 4, we are in our own way.

Especially at ES

Don't know why we go into that stupid box on the 4 on 3. Just do a modified diamond that we use on the 5v4. Ovechkin in the usual spot, Backstrom in the usual spot (both guys slightly closer to the middle of the ice), Brouwer/Ward in the middle (can skate back in forth between his spot and the Mojo spot, as well as going next to the net like Chimera/Laich does sometimes), and Green at the point.

The box is awful.

The box typically is awful, because our usual guys (Ovie, Nick, Green and whoever) don't really move their feet or rotate much. But Thursday night Orlov almost got the GWG precisely because he was moving his feet and rotating his position.

Don't understand why our top guys can be so static in that situation.

Think of it this way. If you use one man near the goalie on a 4 on 3 then you've taken a player out of shooting position and created a 3 on 3 on the outside, which allows the PKers to pressure the puck man to man, which makes a screen in front relatively useless because you can't get a clean shot anyway. In a 4 on 3 situation you're probably looking more to get a man open in a position to shoot, hopefully with movement and to an open net.

The Caps default to static PP setups as it is. At least they've created more options than before when it was all about getting Ovechkin the one-timer, or maybe the point man taking a slapper. Now Brouwer is shooting better and the low man is stepping out and trying the stuff, which keeps the PK more honest. IT ONLY TOOK ALL YEAR FOR THEM TO DO THIS, THOUGH.

So I wouldn't hold your breath regarding any innovations for the rare 4 on 3. If they move more and make quicker passes on the tape they'll score more, period.
