Almost all forums argue that their prospect pool is underrated. This forum is unique in perpetually arguing that its prospect pool is overrated. Hm, wonder why?

Can we just for once f***ing celebrate and be happy for the team?

  1. Quinn Hughes; talks about how dynamic he is with/without the puck, his explosiveness, his puck-moving abilities. Briefly mentions he has an opportunity to win the Calder, obviously won't be on this list next year.
  2. Vasily Podkolzin; highlights his competitiveness, can be overzealous, outside of Hughes is the only 'elite' prospect left in the system.
  3. Thatcher Demko; Considered the top goaltending prospect in the league, expects to see another 30 games out of him, he could challenge for the starting role as early as this season.
  4. Nils Hoglander; focuses on his puck skills and offensive prowess. Huge work ethic, height concerns, nevertheless expected to be one of the leaders on Sweden's World Junior squad.
  5. Olli Juolevi; Expects Juolevi to be in the top four and 1st powerplay unit with Utica,m should see NHL ice before the end of the season if all goes healthy.
  6. Jett Woo; argument that Woo may have taken the biggest step forward out of the 2018 draft class. Has nothing left to prove in Junior, the next step would be the AHL
  7. Tyler Madden; Another argument for Madden being a huge riser in the 2018 draft. Clutch scorer, best celebrations, pretty important stuff.
  8. Michael DiPietro; carried the 67's to a final, should get the majority of starts in Utica next season. Likely two years out from joining the Canucks full time and a little longer before there are tougher decisions between him and Demko.
  9. Kole Lind; Why wasn't anyone taking him? Struggled a bit in first pro year, looked more consistent by mid to late season. Primed to be a breakout candidate and much more threatening for the Comets this upcoming season.
  10. Lucas Jasek; One of the fastest skaters on the ice, effective special teams guy. Not really creative, but very tenacious and has the best shot at a depth role.
  11. Toni Utunen; not as much attention due to lack of offense, but legit prospect and starting to show hybrid-ish skill. Best slow-cooking prospect the Canucks have.
  12. Jack Rathbone; another long term investment, good slow growth in NCAA, high-end skating and transition game. Will likely need AHL time after college.
  13. Zack MacEwen; workhorse in corners/net-front presence. Second most effective for zone entries in Utica. Should see more NHL ice time this season, volume of Canuck forwards means start in Utica.
  14. Ethan Keppen; North/South guy with a heavy release. Most effective ES producer out of draft-eligible. Two more seasons in the OHL before AHL bound. Depending on play may get a WJC invite.
  15. Guilliame Brisebois; plays smart/safe hockey. Quality first pass and can read the play. Somewhat limited ceiling, likely depth defender. Could have been #7 in Vancouver this season but is Utica bound due to FA signings. Top Pairing in Utica.

Found this elsewhere but don't have paywall access. Perhaps someone else does?

EP Rinkside Prospect Pool Rankings: No. 4 Ranked Vancouver Canucks

Thank you Jim Benning. You are this franchise's saviour. ...

Without paying, I can only see the start of the article. It begins as follows:

"Our seventh and final Canadian club lands at No. 4 league-wide. The Vancouver Canucks have been one of the very worst teams in hockey the last four seasons, so you would expect them to boast a bevy of exciting prospects. And while their U23 core is the envy of a good amount of teams, some misses at the top of the draft during Jim Benning’s tenor have muted things a tad."

Somehow that little bit that we can read, that the Canucks have been one of the very worst teams in hockey the last four seasons so you would expect them to boast a bevy of exciting prospects and speaking of misses at the top of the draft during Benning's tenure, doesn't seem to me to give rise to an argument in favour of Benning as the franchise saviour.

I hope Paul was joking.

Of course, as @ProstheticConscience points out, all we have is an appeal to authority (ie no argument at all) that we can't see.

Wait, so that paragraph basically says that the prospect pool should be better given how bad they’ve been? Like the thing all the “haters” always get yelled at for saying?

being happy about the team here is a sin. You have to dislike Benning, or you're waiving pom pom. You also have to believe our prospect pool is struggling, or else the mob comes after you. You will get smart ass response.

Isn’t this thread about an article that says that the prospect pool should be better?

When a team has been as bad as the Canucks have been these past number of years they're bound to find a few good players with those high picks.

Thank goodness you've refrained from using inaccurate hyperbole in your post.

One would hate to contribute to the toxicity of HFCanucks by resorting to such a tactic.....

although it takes a special talent to find the franchise ones..especially when you never win the lottery.

I've never viewed having a strong prospect pool as an accomplishment unto itself worth celebrating. Acquiring prospects is just one step towards the ultimate goal of becoming a Stanley Cup contender. Managing your team so poorly that you perpetually have top prospects, but can never turn the corner and become a contender is a failure, not an accomplishment.

Having top prospects means nothing if they don't contribute to the end goal of becoming a contender. In the end, what benefit has come out of the Canucks previous "top prospects" McCann, Forsling, Olson, Gadjovich, Lind, and Dahlen? Outside of propaganda material.

So far the only top prospects from the Benning era that have moved the needle to becoming a contender are Boeser and Pettersson. I'll pump their tires non stop. However after that it is just TBDs and failures.

Sporting News has the Canucks at #8
NHL farm system rankings: Best, worst prospect pipelines for 2019-20, from 1 to 31
8. Vancouver Canucks

2018-19 rank: 3rd
Key additions: Nils Hoglander (RW), Vasily Podkolzin (RW)
Graduated: Adam Gaudette (C), Elias Pettersson (C)
Traded/not signed: Matt Brassard (RHD), Jonathan Dahlen (LW, SJS), Kristoffer Gunnarsson (LHD)

Jim Benning's plan to beef up his organization with speed and skill continues to achieve benchmarks, as the Canucks not only received a Calder Trophy-winning season from electrifying 2017 first-round pick Elias Pettersson but now have playmaking puck rusher Quinn Hughesready to challenge for a full-time role and his own hardware. Vancouver added a bulldog of a competitor in Russian-trained winger Vasily Podkolzin, who was the 10th pick in June although he likely stays overseas for at least another season.

Benning and staff also scooped up feisty forward Nils Hoglander from Sweden and speedy center Tyler Madden from Northeastern who tied for fourth in freshman scoring in Hockey East. This group, along with two stud goalie prospects, Thatcher Demko and Michael DiPietro, represent a sizable chunk of the organization's future, one that already includes established NHL producers like Bo Horvat and Brock Boeser. Now that the nucleus has formed, the Canucks can patiently follow the progress of an impressive tier of potential point-producing defensemen like Olli Juolevi, Toni Utunen, Jett Woo, and Jack Rathbone.

It's all Benning has going for him, so that's why the spambots keep on banging away at it. The people who fall for it are the ones who never seem to notice the names change every season and the team really isn't improving all that much. Or that Utica's still a wasteland. Or that very, very few of those names ever make it onto the roster. Or that this is what always happens to every prospect pool in the history of the NHL.

4 seems pretty high to be honest. I'm not a huge fan of how Utica has been run and really looking at our picks from 2014, we haven't exactly blown it out of the water.

Considering we also just had two coveted second round picks not just bust but bust spectacularly in Utica on top of two other top prospects literally running away from there mid-season, I'm not incredibly optimistic.

we should fire the management and have his entire scouting crew removed and replaced!
