Will be VERY interesting how much of a shift this is for the UTAH HOCKEY CLUB. There's been heavy indications that they want to improve the club and push for a playoff spot.

It's the fundamental problem with removing Hronek and replacing him with a bunch of big defensive guys, there's a lack of puck moving skill from the back end. Granted he hasn't been able to do this for a while now. There are a lot of interesting UFA options on defence this summer.

Things are coming together for the Utah Soakers.

Hronek hasn't been great but he brings a special skill set that we don't have a lot of. Maybe his performance in the playoffs will knock off some dollars in the negotiations. The team needs more top 4 defensemen not less.

Marat Ates doesn't mention the Canucks in the article and Ehlers playoff resume is very poor but I wouldn't be surprised if there's interest.

If I just go by AFP's current contract projects, plug in who the Canucks are rumoured to be interested in, swap Hronek for Ehlers, buyout Mikheyev, and sign Silovs to the same contract Podkolzin got you end up with this:

Obviously he’s no where near what Lindholm provides today, but given Joshua and Garland’s chemistry as a pair perhaps they could carry him a bit while he transitions to the NHL?

Him or Sasson would be interesting. Raty doesn’t actually play that much centre in the AHL. He’s been more effective on the wing and his lack of speed is less of a problem there. Sasson has a standard north-south game that is based entirely on speed, shots, and work ethic. Stylistically, he’s be a good fit there like Blueger was.

Promote Juulsen. if not enough cap space left.

Or, they willhave enough cap space for a player like Pecse or some other large guy

Forwards might look like;

Joshua 6'2" 3.5 mil - Lindholm 6'1" 6 mil - Garland 5'8" 4.95 mil
Marchenko 6'3" 4 mil? - Voronkov 6'4" 985K- Crouse 6'4" 4 mil
Karlsson 6'1" 1 mil - Aman 6'2" 825 K - Podkolzin 6'1" 1 mil
Lekkerimaki 5'11" 950 K
No real 4th line but maybe two/three 2nd lines
But real season size and mix of youth

Demko - 5 mil, Silovs 1.75 mil

The first 20 players 6 Dmen and 12 skaters and 2 goalies equal a cap hit of 71.54 mil plus OEL's 2.347 mil for around 74 mil, leaving lots for stuff I missed, adding a little more to some contracts, future contracts or pursuing another giant Dman. The team could have around 11+ mil in cap space.

And because they have that many assets trading picks might make sense. Just no anchor contracts. They might even be able to use the space to trade for a bad short term contract that comes with a high pick.

With lines that balanced, 3 potential scoring lines and that size that IMO would be a cup contender next year.

Tocchet likes pairs, Miller/Boeser,McBain who is fast and a good board guy, The Lindholm/Joshua/Garland stays intact, Marchenko/Voronkov are an experienced pair already

Hughes is maturing enough to play with less than Norris level defensive dmen now.
Myers wants to stay and is still effective, the team will have enough to go to 4 mil IF needed, unless a player like Bouchard, Dobson or others that the cap space may make available.

Suter, Cole, Lafferty, Hronek, Pettersson, Hoglander, Mikheyev, Blueger, DeSmith, moved on from or included in trades.

Priority re-signings taking into account playoff performance and cost:

1. Zadorov (absolute beast)
2. Joshua (going to be expensive)
3. Lindholm (if they can move Mikheyev)
4. Myers
5. Blueger
6. Hronek (if can sign for <$6Mx3 (unlikely) or trade at draft)
7. Cole
8. Lafferty (replaced by Podkolzin or Bains)

Playoff performance has moved Hronek way down the list. He hasn't been terrible but others have shown what it takes to be an impactful D-man in the playoffs. He hasn't.
Myers is actually now on the list. Before the playoffs I was against re-signing him.

I think it might be a good idea to trade with teams that need to win now, like Pittsburgh and Washington, make trades for their first picks in 2026.
2026 looks to be another bumper year at the draft.
It would be a great year for the Canucks to pick up a first overall to replace an aging Miller and still have a very good team.

Those teams may agree if players like Hoglander, Mikheyev, Suter are package deals even if the team has to surrender picks in 2024 and 2025 to help get the trade done.
If the team could pull off a block buster trade with Columbus like I posted Boeser might be desirable to one of them.
It might be hard to figure out who could be a bottom feeder in two years but those two teams are trying to stretch out their windows with their aging stars.

With the Canucks having Ian Clark might Silovs suddenly be coveted/available? That Topolio kid is supposed to be really good now. But with Demko's fragility they could be 1 and 1A next year. Maybe make a trade with Demko a centerpiece? just spit balling.

Columbus and Utah will want to be very active, Columbus due to that great year they just endured and Utah to make a slash.

Hey, how about a trade for Crosby?

Be aware teams like Columbus and Buffalo don't trade away their young players and rather accumulate redundant RHD (Columbus) or LHD assets (Buffalo) while having deficiencies elsewhere in their lineups.

They are examples of poor team construction and likely to remain so.

You wanna buy low on these guys, not trade for them after they’ve broken out. That’s what separates the elite teams from the mid.

Snipers who need a change that are buy lows? Kaliyev, Holtz, etc.
