If you're interested in the pre-history of the San Jose Sharks, you should read up on the California Golden Seals, the Bay Area NHL team of the 1970s. The origin of your team in the early 1990s ties directly into the end of that franchise. On the History of Hockey board, the pivotal book about the California Golden Seals is being presented right now and its author Steve Currier is available to answer questions. You can check it out here.

I absolutely love the San Jose Sharks logo, identity, colors, history etc but I think it would be really cool if the Sharks had a throwback night and wore Golden Seals colors, logo and uniform in-game.

great idea.

who owns the trademark and or copyright for the golden
seals, anyone know?

wonder if the sharks wouls have to pay who ever owns it,
and if that is why its not happened.

Can't find anything on who or if any one has the trademark to the name and logo's.

If any one does it was the previous owner or nobody.

The Sharks did an Oakland Seals t-shirt giveaway during the 50th anniversary of the 1967 expansion teams a few years ago.

I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to get Oakland/California Golden Seals throwbacks. It would be awesome if they did.

I was lucky to be part of this great night to help display a item on Seals night in San Jose.

Well the Seals moved to Cleveland presumably owning all their trademarks etc, which had little value to anyone else. They become the Barons, and as it turned out I think they had to lease the Barons trademarks from existing Barons hockey clubs extant in Cleveland from the days of the former AHL Barons. Whatever - when the Barons moved to Minnesota to merge with the North Stars, the Seals/Barons were the surviving corporate entity. When the Stars left for Dallas, that was actually a new corporate entity. The Gunds retained the Seals/Barons/North Stars corporate entity and rights were awarded by the NHL a new franchise to go along with it as part of the negotiations to let the team leave for Dallas. Of course it is possible that the Seals/Barons/North Stars/Sharks let their Seals trademarks lapse along the way but it seems likely there is a very good chance they still own them.
