Requires an account to read, but a couple blurbs in EliteProspect's article about Byfield's play.

Again, he was far from perfect. But I feel his flaws/failures were overstated.

10 final thoughts on the World Juniors using manually tracked data - EP Rinkside

On the forecheck, the clear-cut leaders are Quinton Byfield and Dylan Cozens. These two were forechecking machines. Surprisingly, Ryan Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Arthur Kaliyev were among the tournament’s top forwards in this category.

The leader among forwards? Beniers, whose non-stop motor, attention to detail, and advanced support made game him a constant threat to dispossession the opposition. Once again, Byfield and Cozens were among the leaders, and Oskar Olausson (2021) makes an appearance.

A fact, due to a Byfield thread on HF. :thumbu: Lovely.

“Could overtake” is quite a reach and we weren’t talking about the stars of the 19/20 season. As nice as it would be, Lafreniere was going 1st. No idea why you make things up. He was rated 1st everywhere and nobody with common sense thought otherwise.

Slight hyperbole and some reality are two different things.
It literally says he could over take him in the article I posted

And there were many posters saying Byfield would battle for #1.

Here is another talking about him dropping from #2 on many lists

Here is another talking about him eyeing the #1 pick

To pretend there wasn't talk of Byfield going potentially#1 by the end of the year is a plain lie. That talk ended after the WJC though. So yes there were concerns about his international resume

If there were "concerns" he would have dropped a lot more than to # 2. It's more like he didn't knock it out of the park and Laf did, so after that Laf became the clear, consensus # 1. Any talk subsequent to that was people trying to project his ceiling.

Stutzle and Anton Lundell IMO have already leapfrogged Byfield.
Anton Lundell was probably the steal of the draft.

Come on.. next to Byfield they played in absolutely every situation on the ice.. Byfield played far fewer minutes and is still the youngest guy on the team (a stacked team). Lundell/Stuetzle are captains that seemed to have played all game.

Byfield would still go #2

He barely went 2 last year. Even though it has been as wacky a season as ever with COVID, Stuetzle isn’t the same player he was last year at 17, and he was already good enough to go 2 last year doing what he did in men’s league.

Barely went 2? You know exactly how many teams had him at 2? He went #2 a few months back.. it's not like he was drafted at #2 three years ago and now we're looking back. Come on now!
