Dan Stewart, FC, Sept 22/11:
Starting over in Russia you will find winger Nikolai Prokhorkin, who plays for CSKA -last years reining MHL champion- but is being given a chance in the Kontinental League this year, and looks to be a solid prospect for the 2012 NHL Draft. He has good size at six-foot-three as well as the offensive skills, being both a nice finisher and skilled playmaker, to make his way up scouts list this season.

Prokhorkin also has a physical element and willingness to play it tough, even dropping the gloves, something you don’t get to see very often in young Russian forwards. He is a bit wiry but strong for his age and willing to come back and help in his own zone.

Just out of curiosity, if he is so good, how come according to elitepropects, he never played for Team Russia junior teams?

Nikolai Prokhorkin : Probably an unfamiliar name to most, but he really got my attention when he was the last guy cut from team Russia. This is his draft year and the big winger is a lock in my mind to go in the early second. He is dominating the MHL and had a brief stint in the KHL. He’s 6’2 and 189 and loves to hit like a truck. I got to see live a great hit against Magnitogorsk where he sent Apalkov flying. Despite being on a stacked team and drawing 2nd line duties, he has 14 points in 7 games. This kind of production for a guy his age is very rare, especially added with his size. He might be the most talented Russian in the draft.

Meaning this year's WJC-20?

Oh, and I didn't realize that being 93 born, he isn't eligible to play this year's WJC-18's.

In my book he is just right after Yakupov and no any worse than Grigorenko.

He looks good like all of our other Russians. The kings have a decent stable of Russians considering they don't really draft Europeans. Loktionov, Voynov, Kitsyn and now Prokhorkin.

Hell Yeah!

The Knights picked Prokhorkin as protection on the chance Finnish defenceman Olli Maatta, the Pittsburgh first-rounder who would obviously one of London's two import players, happens to stick in the NHL next year -- or Zadorov, a first-round pick in the Kontinental Hockey League's junior draft, fails to show up.

"He's a '93 (birth year) and property of the L.A. Kings and his first goal is to make their American Hockey League team," Hunter said, "but if he doesn't, he might fall to us.

"You go in with a plan and you have to be prepared if things change."

Vladislav Namestnikov knows Prokhorkin. He played against him in the Russian junior ranks.

"I would call him a good two-way forward," said the former Knight, a pretty good two-way forward himself.

"Seeing Russians being picked like this, I think, shows more are willing to come over and play here," Vladislav said. "It's good to see and a lot of them there do know about London. They know it's one of the better places to play in the CHL."

He's looking like a total steal, tied for 5th in goal scoring in the KHL with an outside chance at the Russian national team at 20 years old, not too shabby.

Nikolai Prokhorkin - LA KINGS -

So ive been reading around on this kid(20 years old) and it looks like he is turning into the real deal playing over in the KHL with CSKA Moscow 45gp. 18g. 16a. 34pts. 45pims +10(first on his team in scoring and 15th in league scoring)... A lot of good articles saying how good he is and how much of a steal it is that LA got him in the 4th round of 2012 Draft. He is currently under contract until 2015. He scores and plays a rough game. Has anyone else seen him play or know much about him?

I assume he dropped in the draft cause of the Russian thing? How high should he have been drafted if so? His stats look like 1st round talent but then again he could be just blooming a year or so later than the 2012 1sts

Not really. He never played in WJC's or U18's for Russia and only put up points in Russian juniors, not in KHL. Also he only played 30 games in his draft year because of injuries. His skating and defensive play were also an issue.

is his skating getting better? in youtube clips it seemed like he skated well.. Im intrigued by this guy. There always seems to good prospects that start doing real well a year or 2 after their draft year and everyone wonders how they slipped in the draft so much. Seems like a prime example again

I saw him at the KHL All Star Game and his skating looked just fine (actually pretty darn good, I would say). He probably was also the player who showed the best stick-handling in this game, for whatever that's worth.
