Black Book, honorable mention -

Another late-born swede who’s had a productive season in the j20 Nationell. Karlsson has been hiding in the shadows for most of the season, despite having played a decent role on his team. After Christmas, he put in another gear and started producing really solid numbers. He is creative and offensively skilled and he thrives when the game is going back and forth and the ice is open. As his numbers suggest with his 31 goals he is a goal scorer who is particularly dangerous on the power play. His shot is his strongest asset and his release is quick and his shot is hard. Technically there are still some details to work on when it comes to his release as he definitely can get more body and power behind his shot. He is a very good shooter at this level though. What limits his chances to reach the NHL for us is his low efforts when it comes to physical play and his level of competitiveness. He doesn't engage in puck battles hard enough and often goes in with the intent of letting someone else bring the physicality. He has to learn how to win puck battles and grind when things aren't going his way. This could work just fine for him even in the SHL, but it will limit his chances of reaching the NHL.

EP has him at 97:

As one of the 2022 NHL Draft’s elder statesmen, Gustav Karlsson entered the J20 Nationell season with higher expectations than most of his first-time draft-eligible peers. And he delivered, scoring 48 points in 41 games for Örebro’s J20 squad, good for sole possession of the team lead. Karlsson was most effective at spotting gaps in coverage and abusing them this season, but we have some doubts about his ability to create offence in the same ways at the next level. While his speed was an advantage in the J20, his high-stance, wide recovery, and a heel-kick that punctuates the end of his stride limit the effectiveness of his skating and his total output. “He moves smartly down the right side and is good at delivering a shot or a pass at the right moment,” Elite Prospects Swedish regional scout Jimmy Hamrin wrote in an April 10th game report. “His physical play is a big weakness. Probably a future SHLer though, but I like how his development is trending up fast” For Karlsson’s offence to come along for the ride to an NHL career, he’ll have to integrate more playmaking elements, better deception, and improve the timing on his passes.
