Tavares put up 134 points in his second year in the OHL. Crosby put up 135 points (albeit in the Q) in his first year, and he just turned 16 when that season started.

McDavid turned 16 two months ago and he's currently producing half as much as what Crosby did back then. Of course, this is unfair as it is the middle of the season and I'm sure McDavid is worn down, plus he is on a worse team, in a tougher league. From what I've watched on him, he is very talented and combines tenacity with vision and great stick skills.

But he still isn't coming close to Crosby's production, and I'm not sure if we should be so quick to call him the best prospect since Crosby, especially with Tavares' great junior career.

I agree with that. I'm not really interested in comparisons until he's in his draft year.

I think people's expectations of McDavid can be a little lofty - there were people on this board predicting he'd get more than 100 pts this year - even though that was incredibly unlikely (and in the end he hasn't come close to that).

The kid has tons of skill and talent, but man.. I've heard from a bunch of people that he's one of the cockiest players they've ever spoken to... hopefully it's just a youth thing and it'll pass cuz that's not the kind of personality I want in a team. He is only 15 and has time to mature.

Take it with a grain of salt.
15 and 16 year olds and their parents are often jealous of players of his ilk.

Anyways:
TPS_Guy "Yeah, he's definitely coming" - Kevin Prendergast when I asked him if @cmcdavid97 (16) is too young or if he's too good NOT to take to U18s

Most kids of McDavid's talent level are cocky. It is what it is. He'll come around and personally, in the games I saw of him this year, he didn't seem to go over-the-top with his goal celebrations or did a lot of chriping.

Especially last year, when you're a 14-year-old dominating kids a year older than you, you're going to be a little cocky at least, because you know he was getting his share of abuse from opposing players (physically and verbally).

I always take stories about cocky kids with a grain of salt. I remember growing up playing with an absolute monster of a kid. 6'3, 210 at 14 who had it all talent wise (he likely would have been a mid-level NHL player if not for injuries). Super nice guy. Quiet. Down to earth. Great teammate.

A lot of parents hated him and said he was cocky. Your hockey Dads want their kid to be the best. And they'll say anything to bring the best down

It's never fun for other parents to have to see one kid dominate the rest. That said, there's a right way of going about it and a wrong way. I remember hearing stories about parents spitting at Lemieux when he'd leave the locker room after games. He'd have to switch jackets with teammates because he was just so much better than everybody else and people couldn't handle it.

Any 15/16 year old who can put up a PPG in the OHL before most of their peers can even legally drive is going to be cocky. Guaranteed.

He's the best prospect since Crosby. People way want to put Tavares in between the two, but IMO, McDavid's quite a bit better than Tavares was at the same age. McDavid's elite skating ability puts him on another level. Tavares was the better pure goal-scorer between the two though, no doubt about that.

Anyone else disagree with this a lot?

I do.

Tavares was dominant at that stage because of his advanced physical characteristics.

McDavid still has a Justin Bieber body (the body of a young child).

McDavid's talent level is higher, as well as his skating.

JT has the similar IQ, but Connor's skating in the little boy's body shouts higher ultimate upside to me. When the kid puts on some strength he'll be unstoppable at the junior level, much like JT was.

Yes.. but it's not surprising, given the avatar and the location.

... I don't live anywhere near him and what does it have to do with anything? I was a fan of Tavares in his day as well & the majority of my hfboards post come in the Great Britain section
