By His Measuring Stick He Must Have Viewed Our Season As A Success...

By that measuring stick, our season is a complete and utter failure. We didn't stock picks at deadline, we were in it for the longest of times, and we're picking at #30. Hell, we even played our vets over the kids most of the time "to win games", jeopardizing our entire future.

NBA and NHL are so different though.. The #8 seed making the NBA playoffs has no shot at winning a championship.. You're either one of the handful of potential championship teams, or you're guaranteed to not win anything.. Hockey is way more unpredictable.. So I understand why Harris is tanking the Sixers in order to build a championship team, while he probably would never ask Lou to do that with the Devils (and Lou would quit before tanking anyway)

To me, the bolded part is my biggest frustration about the 2013-2014 Devils season, and my primary criticism of Peter Deboer (who I otherwise think has done a good job with limited resources to work with).

I don't care what "stick" he used to to measure our season. *PAUSE* :sarcasm:

All that mattered was this : The Team was Mediocre, The Coach was Mediocre, and the Devils missed the playoffs.

Nothing more needs to be looked at in-depth.

And that's the bottom line......because glenwo2 said so.

You really cannot compare the NHL and the NBA. In the NHL, it is all about making the playoffs and getting hot at the right time once the playoffs start. The difference in talent between most NHL teams and the impact from stars players is smaller than the NBA.
In the NBA you need at least one top 5 player or two top 10 players or you are toast in the NBA, the NHL meanwhile is all about having more depth than the other team. And unless you get a LeBron or Shaq in free agency in the NBA which happens maybe once ever 15-20 years, you have to get a couple of top 5 draft picks or even win the lottery in order to get that one big star. Sure you also need some depth in the NBA in order to win but depth means nothing without that big star.
Being an average team is the worst place to be in the NBA, even if you make the playoffs. An average NHL team that gets hot in the playoffs can win it all.

The best part of the article states that Harris has a net worth of 2.7 billion dollars.

Couldn't resist.

But that's very encouraging which means that(combined with the CAP going up) Lou isn't going to be as Limited as he was in spending when Huckster-beek was owning the team.

This is apples and oranges and you are missing the point of the article.

Sixers may of been the worst team in basketball this year but they also took huge steps in a current rebuild.

They have a rookie of the year candidate already. Another promising rookie who had to sit out due to injury next year. They also have a I think two first rounders this year with their own having high odds of being number 1 overall in a deep draft with potential game changing super stars at one and two.

They have more second round picks then a team should have and tons of cap space.

It's not remotely the same as our situation and I didn't even factor HOW different the NBA and the NHL is.

What I like about what the 76ers did is, to me, it shows the owners are willing to do what's needed to create a championship caliber team, even if it takes a strategy that appears unusual by traditional standard.

It's hardly unusual in the NBA, the only difference is actually being open about admitting it. Doesn't always work in the NBA either, the Knicks tanked for a couple years to try and clear enough cap space to get LeBron and wound up with Amare instead.

Phil Jackson had spoken about doing just this same thing next year...the middle is the worst place to be in the nba

But that's what I like, the owners/management didn't half ass it or try to hedge their bets. They see that you're either a title contender or garbage in the NBA, the middle ground is mediocre forever but there are still teams that seem content to just be mediocre and have no hope. They picked a strategy and completely committed to it and I think commitment and follow through on a strategy is important from management/ownership.

Sixers weren't going to compete with the Pacers or the Heat but now they have Michael Carter Williams, Nerlens Noel, and two more top 10 picks this year. It's not an ideal season but they are building for the future.

I'm not a fan of the NBA, but I hope the Sixers complete and succeed in their rebuild just in time for Harris to move the team to Newark.

He may not move the team, but I can see him do what the Celtics use to do in Hartford with a few home games during the regular season. But he does have commision snuff flims money and could buy the Sixers out of Philadelphia.

The only way it could possibly happen is if the league allows him to move the franchise to Newark while also moving another team
to Philly at the same time and keeping the Sixers name in Philly.

Harris would rather keep the open dates at The Rock for lucrative concerts anyway.

I'd rather see The Rock get the Big 10 men's hoops tourney now that Rutgers is in it and the league wants the nyc area market.

The 76ers will get New Orleans' first round pick as long as it is not in the top 5. I think New Orleans finished with the 10th worst record in the NBA, so the odds the 76ers get that pick are pretty good.

The best case scenario for the 76ers is to 1) win the lottery (or at least stay in the #2 spot), 2) not have New Orleans win the lottery, and 3) not have any teams with better records than New Orleans win the lottery (because the NO pick would drop a little if that happens). The worst case scenario for the 76ers is for three teams with better records/lower odds in the lottery, including New Orleans, win the lottery, and the 76ers fall to the fifth pick (behind the 3 lottery-winning teams and Milwaukee) and lose the New Orleans pick.

Incidentally, the 76ers have a truly amazing FIVE second round picks, so they might find a diamond in the rough or trade 2-3 of those picks to move up to the lower part of the 1st round.

Why would you move a team from the 5th largest market in the country to the 63rd largest market? That make NO business sense.

Basketball and Philly are just as much two peas in a pod as hockey and Philly
