NHL's ordinary course buy-out period begins today and ends June 30 at 5:00 ET. Today at 5:00 is also 1st club elected arbitration deadline.
Red Wings have not been shy about using the buyout tool in recent years;
Tootoo in 2014
Coliacovo 2013
Jakub Kindl is a candidate. We have prospects that are ready to step in to the bottom 6 role and have a much better cap number. Any thoughts of him as a top 4, or ever becoming a top 4, are far fetched at this point.
Kindl Buyout:
2 years and 5.5M remaining on contract at 2.4M (AAV) cap hit.
Buyout = 2/3 contract (3.66M) paid over twice remaining length of contract.
3.66 / 4 = .915
2.4 subtract .915
Cap Savings 0f 1.48M for next year.
The other candidate is Stephen Weiss. For those that want to see a Weiss buyout (not me):
3 years at 16M remaining at 4.9M (AAV) caphit.
Buyout = 10.66M / 6 years = 1.77M per
4.9 subtract 1.77
Cap savings of 3.13M next year.
I guess there has been some calling for a Franzen Buyout, but that makes a lot more sense after next season if you look at his contract breakdown.
