NHL's ordinary course buy-out period begins today and ends June 30 at 5:00 ET. Today at 5:00 is also 1st club elected arbitration deadline.

Red Wings have not been shy about using the buyout tool in recent years;
Tootoo in 2014
Coliacovo 2013

Jakub Kindl is a candidate. We have prospects that are ready to step in to the bottom 6 role and have a much better cap number. Any thoughts of him as a top 4, or ever becoming a top 4, are far fetched at this point.

Kindl Buyout:
2 years and 5.5M remaining on contract at 2.4M (AAV) cap hit.
Buyout = 2/3 contract (3.66M) paid over twice remaining length of contract.
3.66 / 4 = .915
2.4 subtract .915
Cap Savings 0f 1.48M for next year.

The other candidate is Stephen Weiss. For those that want to see a Weiss buyout (not me):

3 years at 16M remaining at 4.9M (AAV) caphit.
Buyout = 10.66M / 6 years = 1.77M per
4.9 subtract 1.77
Cap savings of 3.13M next year.

I guess there has been some calling for a Franzen Buyout, but that makes a lot more sense after next season if you look at his contract breakdown.

The only buyouts that the Wings weren't shy about using were the 2 cap-exempt buyouts that came courtesy of the new CBA. What you're suggesting they use - a traditional buyout - is a completely different animal.

As for buying out Kindl, I don't see the point. We can waive him if he's that bad and it will only cost the Wings $1.5M in dead space, which they don't look poised to use anyways. With that said, I don't even think he's untradeable. $2.4M for this year and next is hardly an albatross.

The wings are not really in cap trouble so unless they plan on making a huge move (lol) there is no reason to buy anyone out. Weiss hasn't impressed but I expect he will get another chance under Blash and if he is still not up to snuff his buyout will be less costly next year.

Depends if the Wings plan on dipping into free agency this off-season. They'll have to decide on Weiss before they can even make an offer, so it's tricky.

Here's the buyout cap hit for this year, 2015:

2015-16 $1,066,667
2016-17 $1,066,667
2017-18 $2,566,667
2018-19 $1,666,667
2019-20 $1,666,667
2020-21 $1,666,667

And for next year, 2016:

2016-17 $983,333
2017-18 $2,483,333
2018-19 $1,583,333
2019-20 $1,583,333

The 2015 year is just Ugly. I really dont want him on the books for 6 years.

I feel as though we are better off to RETAIN SALARY.
On Weiss. And give him away at 3.5M per year, and in a sense then we only have to deal with a 3year black hole.

As BinCookin said I do not want Weiss' cap hit ti stick with us for 6 more years. Anyway if I remember correctly the wings are several million under the cap so our ability to sign a free agent shouldn't be hampered by cap considerations. Multiple signings may get tricky but lets be honest, Holland isn't actually going to sign anyone anyway much less make 2 big moves which lends credence to the idea of keeping Weiss around for another year. After his two horrific giveaways against NJ I believe I said I wouldn't defend Weiss anymore. I'm not. I just think even a small cap hit like that for six seasons is outlandish sinxe thats longer than we even signed him for in the firat place. It is easier to bite on 4 years.

Get rid of Weiss. Who cares about his cap hit for 6 seasons. The cap will go up anyway so 1.7 mil will become irrelevant. I don't want to see that waste of space on the ice.

I mean that's 6 seasona down the road. This is a tired example but maybe the wings could have made Hossa a better offer if they had 1.7 million more in cap space--- they were right up against it the entire season. That 1.7m is relatively insignificant but with Nyquist, Helm, Abs, and Dekeyser all looking for raises in the near future 1.7m might be the difference between matching an offer sheet or not. It might be the difference between retaining all of them or losing one for nothing. Secondly there is literally no guarantee the cap will go up in the coming years. It will likely rise some if the canadian dollar regains some value, but given global economic conditions that is no certainty. Lastly there is no incentive to buy him out this season if we are not immediately pressed against the cap (we aren't) as even if he plays as a 14th forward only dressed 15 times this season that 2 year difference in the length of the buyout against the cap is huge. A shortsge of roster spots are the only thing that is a slight concern and Pulks has a spot and anyone else is mostly irrelevant at this point to be honest.

I don't see Weiss as a top 9 forward (Dats, Z, Abby, Tats, Riley, Nike, Jurco, Helm, Pulkks) and if injuries hit I'd rather call up AA, Mantha, or Larkin.

So I see no point in having Weiss. I would buy him out. But we know Holland loves excessive depth (hoarding) so he'll be back.

I don't think they will, but if the Wings buy out Weiss I think we are in for serious moves this off season. There really is no reason to buy him out this year if we are going to have the cap space. Give him a shot with a new coach, if he fails then bench him and buy him out next year. Waiting until next year lowers his hit a bit and also takes off a year. Unless we can use the space this season, then there is zero reason to buy him out. Heck if he has a decent season maybe he becomes tradeable at the end of this season if we still want to move him.

I don't see the reason for any buyouts especially with a new coach. Players that formerly lacked performance can thrive under new coaching. No reason to set up extra years of forfite cap spcae and I don't really think the wings are in terrible trouble with cap anyway. There are no free agents worth selling the farm over so I don't see the need to take a penalty to create space.

Salary retention is the only way, and I'm very sceptical it wil happen at this season. Maybe at next summer, if Weiss suffers also under Blashill.

If Weiss gets bought out it will be next summer I believe. 3 of the 4 years are basically drops in the bucket given that we will have a plethora of RFA contracts on the team. No point really in buying him out this year given the extra year + cash on the structure.

If we're not gonna be pushed hard against the cap we're better of seeing what Weiss can do under Blashill. Remember he was healthy to end last season, where he did decent in the role he was given, and he's hopefully having a good summer and is well prepared. A good season would change the outlook a lot. For one, he could be worth keeping around for the length of his contract, and for two he could easily be traded then if we retain some salary. That's worth exploring, make cap decisions when need to down the road and not in advance.

That said, this is make or break season for Weiss.

So after spending pages and pages talking about dumping Howard to free cap space, no one wants to buy out Weiss...

I believe the underlying reason is that financially there is no point to do anything with either contract this coming year. Lets be real here unless Holland (rofl) makes a blockbuster deal for a elite d-man we ain't contending for **** next year. Yes we will make the playoffs and yes we will more than likely be bounced in the first round once again.

Next year each contract hopefully will be easier to move to get out salary to offset salary increases of the younger up and coming players. But with Weiss tolerating him for 1 more year won't kill us. Not much of a fan of his at all. But I can deal with him for 1 more year.

It just doesn't make fiscal sense. Maybe he comes in healthy and Blashill likes him who knows? Better than taking a 6 year penalty at least for this year. I realize it is long odds that he will play well but it still doesn't make sense to buy him out.

Yeah, I totally understand your guys reasoning.

In the goalie thread folks were making it seem like we had a pressing need to open up cap space. Like trade Jimmy for whatever, even before free agency or we make a trade.

So by that same token, it would seem getting rid of Weiss would be much easier and accomplish the same goal. So I'm just surprised those some folks aren't coming here to support buying Weiss out.

You are forgetting most importantly there are 2-3 posters who absolutely hate Howard bar none. They also are incapable of making a half way reasonable argument to move him this year as well. I am no fan off his and I don't like imho that he gets overrated by a lot of DRW faithful but it is just bad plan plain and simple to only start the year with 1 goalie with only 2 years of starter exp in the Ahl and no reliable back up.

If Petr outperforms Howie over the year and takes the #1 spot and doesn't let go hey I am all for him going forward. But Howard like Weiss are just two contracts we can live with for now. Because there is no pressing need to do much with either contract other than to hang on to them 1 more year and hope there value stabilizes/improves. The only way either contract would need to be moved is if the impossible happens but we all know how Mr. Legacy Protection (kenny) operates so I am not holding my breath for that to happen.

If we trade howard and mrazek plays lights out next season with +60 games, he will be+6 million goalie after that. If howard plays 55 and mrazek 30 at next season, mrazek will extend with a cheaper contract. That's the key point to still keep howard. Also howard could bounce back and Mrazek bust, or get injured in a worst-case scenario, so you also need security for a low-probability thing with two guys.

Then, after Mrazek is extended AND if he looks like a real starter, we could consider trading howard, if Mrazek is still better and signed long-term. Mrazek would be bargain starter for ~3M with his next deal and that could give us salary cap competition advance on that point. That why howard is still important, at least for 1 season.

Jimmy howard is still 11th best starting goalie from active guys career SV% (+250 games group) with 17th highest goalie caphit. Nothing wrong with the deal. Should be tradeable.

Look. We need Howard next year like it or not. Mrazek could be a huge bust for all we know.

On the other hand, Weiss is a piece of crap. Just dump him. People in here can't do math. 1.6 out of 72 is very little. Who cares. He's worthless.
