Risto is awful defensively. Great offensively on the PP but he is on a different level of awful when it comes to defence.

Most of his points come from the powerplay. 5 v 5 offensively he is average but that -41 is a red flag.
Is he really awful defensively or is it the team hes played on? I know the sample size is much smaller, but id love to see advanced stats for any Sweden games.

Tyson Barrie and Matt Duchene shared the green jacket a few years back too and while they arent Pietrangelo and ROR, they are hardly "Awful" either.

Why Sweden games?

Lets put it this way...on a team last season that finished with 76 points and and has players like Skinner/Eichel....Risto finished with -41. During the Leafs tank year (2015-16) and with a cast of mediocre garbage finishing dead last with 69 points...our worst minus on D were Gardiner/Rielly, tied with -17.

Yes he is. He has the worst +/- in the last 5 years of any player in the league. Not just defenceman, player!

He is -138 in 390 games, and the fact that PP goals conceded dont count, that is a pretty atrocious figure to have against your name.

Also, nearly 50% of his points come from the PP during that time. So his 5v5 point production is exactly great. No other dman on the Buffalo team even comes close. Bogosian has -46 over the same 5 year period whilst playing on the same bad Buffalo team.

He hasn't been great defensively, but your use of +/- as a definitive point (actually, the only real point) severely undermines your argument.
