Hey Sabres PR on X / Twitter, how about another useless stat?

"The Sabres gave an outstanding 60-minute team effort in a big win at the league-leading NY Rangers Tuesday night, after an abysmal total-team lack-of-effort against the Devils Saturday night. If they play another total stinker tonight against the Blues, it will be their 300th 3-game stretch in the last ~1000 games dating back to the start of the 2011-12 season the Sabres display inconsistent Jekyll and Hyde behavior and on-ice results, breaking the record of 299 set in the first ~40 years of the franchise existence."

Not getting a goal in the first 2 or 3 minutes, playing disciplined in defense. Blues aren't that strong, so that could be something

Breaking news: it's young/bad teams.

It's like watching those old Wright Brothers videos. One of these days that plane will stop falling back to the ground after 45 seconds and stay up in the air, and the rest will be history. That's the hope, at least.

I was worried Joki was going to sit. Man, 2023 has been a weird year, haha.

I'd go with Clifton, personally, though EJ had a couple ugly giveaways against the Rags.

This feels like a let down game, this team still needs to win a lot more or string together a win streak for me to get back into believing in them this season.

I'm really curious about what the situation is with Greenway.

First he was out against Pittsburgh because of a late medical situation. Then NJ/NY was for personal reasons. Now in back to-back days the report was that he had to speak with Adams and now Granato, and his playing status is still uncertain.

Really hope whatever is going on with him is OK.

goaltending and being disciplined
True - but they have also collected a bunch of wins against some middling teams. Here is a list of their 11 wins. Other than the COL and TBL wins, it's not the league's elite.

SEA
PIT (during a stretch when PIT was 3-6-0)
CGY (when they were in the middle of a 6-game losing streak)
NJD
MTL
ARI
COL
TBL
ANA
ARI
CHI

Meanwhile, in 6 of their 9 losses, they have given up 5 or more goals (although a bunch of those were with Hofer in net).

Nonetheless, this will still be a tough game for Buffalo. STL is good at home, and the Sabres struggle against highly structured teams (and are wildly inconsistent). Hoping they can build off the Rangers game, but it could be a let down.

I feel like we always lose when we go to St Louis and I'm not far off. 1 win there since 2011. We did win there the last time we played there though, so we knows.

Which team shows up tonight? The one against the Rangers or the one against NJ?

Interesting notes from The Athletic "Doms 16 stats"...

Blues have a tendency to confound analytics and this year they’re doing it in very creative ways. Despite the team ranking 25th in expected goals at even strength, 24th in actual goals, 31st on the power play and 16th on the penalty kill — St. Louis is 11-9-1. That’s a solid 90-point pace despite a modest minus-4 goal differential.

Aside from good sequencing luck, the goal differential is also misleading given the team’s weaknesses in every score state. But there are two situations where the Blues excel that don’t get much attention: empty net and short-handed.

With a net empty, the Blues are genuinely excellent. They do a great job of putting games away (5-0) and fighting back (1-2). That plus-4 goal differential is one of the best in the league and is backed by a plus-6 expected goal differential. It’s a similar deal short-handed: six short-handed goals for and only two against.

The team is plus-8 in situations most would overlook and minus-12 otherwise. It’s a bit unconventional — we’ll see if it’s sustainable.

interesting, but weird. doesn't seem like a recipe for long-term success.
