1.) Buffalo was very close to the cap floor, this gives them some wiggle room if they want to sell more guys and/or make roster moves with Rochester.
2.) NYI can now accrue daily cap space, they were previously over the cap but compliant due to LTIR. They are now under the cap. This will be important for them at the deadline.

He retired a year ago...
There's retiring where they actually file the paperwork to terminate any ongoing contracts with the League and enter the alumni/pension program, and then there's "retiring", where the player announces they will no longer play again, but the contract stays active. Boychuk was the latter.

Let's NYI (and now BUF) still use his contract in cap calculations and in transactions, and the player can still gain access to insurance and team medical, while getting paid their full contract amount.
