Knew it was Butcher the moment i saw the Dougie deal and "NJD/BUF".

Just seemed like the odd man out at this point. I think NJ prefers to play a guy like Siegenthaler on the 3rd pairing.

Why would NJ pay for someone to take Butcher? That doesn’t make sense to me.
Well, he was going to be our #7 at best. This makes some room for Bahl, I guess. But it is weird that we had to pay a pick to get rid of a player who's serviceable in the right role and is a UFA after a year.

Why do people continue to think Butcher is good? This isn’t surprising. He’s small and slow - it’s like a death combo for a good long-term career as an effective NHL blueliner. He’s a good passer and can play the PP. He’s a limited player who took advantage of a paper thin Devils blueline opportunity his rookie year but was quickly tumbled down the depth chart. He’s a spare part on any decent team and he’s overpaid. He’s the definition of a cap dump.

As much as we like to think ownerships are bottomless cash dispensers, I'm sure they approved dropping a 4.1 mil salary if he wasn't going to be used. I'm guessing Hamilton's getting a pretty sizable signing bonus, so losing Butcher helps with that.

Butcher is expensive for what he brings, but he can be a useful 3rd pairing / PP specialist. We used him correctly in his rookie season but his defensive flaws got exposed with more ice time in later years.

The writing was on the wall. Their top 6 has no room for him. Just lucky they don't need to retain.

Still lots of cash for their own FA's and maybe another splash.

His offensive stats are not bad at all.

The problem with Butcher is that he was born without a solid jaw line.
