Buf - Staal (Corrected)+ Montour
Mtl- Byron - (Lekhonen or Kulak) + 2021 (2nd +4th)

Buffalo has a young NHL player and 2 draft picks for an aging "C" and UFA "D"
Mtl fills the Center gap (Evans is not ready) and Chariot is out for Long time.

I did not add the $$$ but looking at CAP Friendly it should be close.

Before you start the Byron hating replies.... it's stickly for balancing the $$$ not for value

Mtl would consider (Mete or a younger B prospect) if Buf retains $ for cap space.

Fair?

Let the trashing begin....

It's unlikely Montreal make any trades with US teams before the trade deadline.

i read the trade 6 times,
and still don't see why Sabres would choose that return for those guys,
who both likely offer value to contenders,
as a proven RHD in his prime,
and former all-star 2-way, Cup-winning vet C

buffalo isn’t taking Montreal long term cap dumps.

Staal alone can get a 2nd

Montour can get a 2nd as well

that is without taking back salary beyond thus year or taking back players they’d expose in the ED or not even give a QO as an RFA

What would be fair in your opinion?
Remember both UFA's and you can signed them back if you want to.

UFA rentals usually don't fetch high returns.

Last year :
1) Vancouver Canucks acquire forward Tyler Toffoli from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Tim Schaller, the rights to forward Tyler Madden, a 2020 second-round draft pick and a 2022 conditional draft pick.

2) Arizona Coyotes acquire Taylor Hall, Blake Speers from New Jersey Devils in exchange for defenseman Kevin Bahl, forward Nick Merkley, forward Nate Schnarr and conditional draft picks. |

Looks to me we are pretty close in value....
Staal = Offered a 2nd.
NHL Player + 4th = 2nd or Montour

Good luck in "not taking" salary back from any of the contenders or pretenders.

I thought Staal already said he was not interested to come play for a Canadian team because of the 14 days quarantine?

Nyr turn expiring Nash into a 1st, Lindgren, Spooner who became Strome
And turned expiring Hayes into 1st and Lemieux

Deals should be including high upside youth (like your Madden example) not easily replaceable vets who require expansion draft consideration.
If Habs need move salary, price goes higher, Nash return was so good partly because Bruins also sent back Beleskey, who NYR parked in AHL for multiple seasons

Your Hall trade is very misleading, here were the conditions to the draft picks.

*Conditions: If Arizona's 2020 1st selection is in the top three, New Jersey will receive Arizona's 1st round pick in 2021
Result: New Jersey will receive Arizona's 2020 1st round pick.
**Conditions: The 3rd round pick can upgrade to a 2nd if the Coyotes win a playoff round OR if Taylor Hall re-signs in Arizona. The pick upgrades to a 1st if Hall re-signs AND the Coyotes win a playoff round.

Thus he was worth a Top 3 protected 1st and a conditional 3rd that could go as high as another 1st.

There's a big difference in taking back salary to faciliate a trade and saddling yourself with a 3d/4th liner being paid 3.4mil for 2 additional years

Pretty much made my point:

At the time... Hall was considered a top 3 on pretty much any team and only returned 1st and 3rd. (Rental price) + low end prosects
(20 and 23 Year old AHL players)

Of course you get more if he was signed long term + performs well. (2 -1st was fair IMO, maybe on the low side).

Paying 2 NHL players + 2nd and 4th seems fair (maybe slightly high) for a 3-4 line center and 4-5 "D" man (Staal and Montour).

Taking salary back is fine. Taking a long-term cap dump (and pretending it actually adds value to the trade for Buffalo, no less) is absurd.
