So I was looking at some stats to compare Schenn to other recent 18-year-old forwards in the WHL.
Code:
Player	Season	GP	G	A	Pts	Pts/Gm
Schenn	2009-10 59	34	65	99	1.677966102
Getzlaf	2003-04 49	28	47	75	1.530612245
Mueller	2006-07 51	21	57	78	1.529411765
Lupul 2001-02 72	56	50	106	1.472222222
Upshall	2001-02 61	32	51	83	1.360655738
Benn 2007-08 51	33	32	65	1.274509804
Dawes	2003-04 56	47	23	70	1.25
Brule 2004-05 70	39	48	87	1.242857143
Fehr 2003-04 71	50	34	84	1.183098592
Chipchura	2004-05 28	14	18	32	1.142857143
Ladd 2003-04 71	30	45	75	1.056338028
Svatos	2000-01 39	23	18	41	1.051282051
Moller 2006-07 68	32	37	69	1.014705882
Lucic 2006-07 70	30	38	68	0.971428571
Setoguchi	2004-05 69	33	31	64	0.927536232
Sutter	2007-08 59	26	23	49	0.830508475
Christensen	2001-02 70	22	36	58	0.828571429
Versteeg	2004-05 68	22	30	52	0.764705882
Byfuglien	2003-04 66	16	29	45	0.681818182
Now I know junior stats don't always translate to the NHL, but is this guy going to be a beast or what?

I don't want to sound like I'm dismissing him... I'm really not. He is a very good prospect and his game will translate well when he's ready to transition to the NHL, it's just that those numbers might have a lot to do with where and what situation he was playing in. Scott Glennie, who had a disappointing year by most up-close measures, would place 5th on that list with a 1.349 PPG.

Getzlaf missed time that year, and he did it from a team that scored 220 goals and had only one other player at a PPG or above 50 points for that matter.

Schenn did it from a team that scored 320 goals and had 5 80+ point players and 7 PPG players.

Too answer you question in your title, no. But he could be a very good player in the NHL. Looking at his stats, he looked like he could have played in the NHL last year. Did he need to put on some weight or just that the Kings had to need to rush him?

Also, question for you, was this strictly players that were 18 years old in juniors? Cuz I noticed that Evander Kane had very similar point totals to Schenn.

I wouldn't read into stats like that too much...

If Kane was playing in the WHL last season he would have tore it apart, but he made his NHL club and Schenn didn't.

2009/2010 Los Angeles Kings: playoff team
2009/2010 Atlanta Thrashers: non-playoff team

There's your answer.

In all seriousness, though, the only reason he didn't play in the NHL this season was because, a. the Kings have a current logjam at center, and b. Lombardi wanted Schenn to experience the Memorial Cup, considering the Wheat Kings were hosts this past year.

You cannot really compare Players in Major Junior like that. Depending on the year and league, some Major junior leagues may have more offense or less, depending on what positions the more talented players from the region play. For example, Montreal's 5th round pick Brendan Gallagher had 40 goals and 80 points as a 17 year old this past year. I'm not saying Schenn wont be really good, but you cant really compare players like that.

That's because Kane's NHL club needs youth influx now, while the Kings have no need to rush Schenn. If the positions were switched, Schenn surely would have made the Thrashers while Kane would have been back in the WHL if he were with LA.

However, I wouldn't take those stats as such a positive indicator. Schenn will be a 2nd/3rd line center, and does not have the same potential as Getzlaf, that's for sure.

Even though Schenn would have made the NHL last season had he played in Atlanta it doesnt mean that he's a better player than Kane.

As for the question, no I think Kane is at least as good if not better.

Schenn had 99 pts in 59 games as an 18 year old.
Kane had 96 pts in 61 games as a 17 year old.

And yes, Schenn would have likely made Atlanta's roster last year too.

The thing is that both were on stacked teams. Last year Kane had Zabotel, Blum, Cunnignham, Wright.

This year Schenn had Calvert, Glennie, Robak, Fehr, Hamonic (later on)

Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't know. Not exactly easy to keep up with the WHL down here in Georgia.

Since we are sitting here comparing Kane's last year in the WHL vs. Schenn's. I would figure he is not a cut above any of the elite players that have recently come out of the WHL.

No way Schenn ends up better than Getzlaf... I don't know, he's one of my favorate 2009 first rounders, I do hope he ends up as something good though.

Ya but Gallagher is a shrimp.

Schenn can skate, pass, decent shot, can hit, play sound 2 way hockey, and has fought in the past.

Im not saying i agree with the post title, but with the departure of Eberle, id definitely rate Schenn was the top player in the Wub

Not only did Kane put up better numbers in their draft year, he also knocked out Matt Cooke this year. I like Schenn, but IMO Kane will be the better of the two.

Schenn had 88 Points in 70 games compared to Kane's 91 in 71 games in their draft year. Hardly a huge difference. Both guys are great forwards

I choose he's gonna be a or what?

But seriously, I'd take those junior stats with a pinch of salt, once I see how he does in the NHL after a few seasons then we go from there.
