That guy shows the fine line between a very good NHL player and a non-NHLer.

Exactly this. He had some impressive tools in his kit, especially his shot, but you need more than a couple of skills to be a factor in the NHL game in and game out. I think he just couldn't quite play at the speed required.

I remember him fooling me multiple times into thinking he was going to suddenly become a star player. There were at least three separate occasions of that, though I became more and more tepid on each one. I've just never seen a guy get so close to stardom without actually at least "making it" into the league on a daily basis. I'm actually sad he's retired; I was really hoping he'd give it one more shot in which he'd likely fall short, for old times sake.
