Wife and I were at the game (lost).
Went to Seneca Buffalo Creek casino next door for first time (lost).
Went to an early (for us) dinner (wasn't as good as last time).
Really needing a Bills win to salvage the w/e.
My observations:
We were 1st row 300s behind the TB bench (halfway between the center red line and blue line).
Anthem sisters were awesome.
Definitely kids day in the crowd.
Wife got a couple selfie shots with Sabretooth (a couple rows behind us).
1st period was not good.
Sabres had no jump, no burst.
A couple flubs of the puck and boom, down 2-0 after only 3 or 4 shots against.
Tampa was moving as a unit. Their forecheck was more coordinated and was a stride closer than Buffalo's the whole game. In the first half of the game, I never felt BUF's forecheck was a threat / pressure to the Lightning.
Dahlin and Clifton were the only ones with any velocity on their shots all night.
I thought Clifton and Peterka had a good game.
In contrast, Power had a rough night - positionally, skating, anticipating. I continue to be unimpressed with Power. I know when he is good, he is noticeably good, but when he's not good, he's bad. There is little middle-ground with him in brian_griffin's gradebook.
Sabres had no urgency on most of their line changes.
There were times where 28-19-21 or 71-28-21 had some possession in the second, but could get it worked out front for decent looks/shots.
Passing / possession in general was poor for the first half of the game, and below average after that. Someone earlier in the thread noted the same - passing to a space the teammate can't reach in time, passing to the body instead of the stick, forcing passess through tight coverage resulting in turnovers. Dumping mindlessly. It's like the Sabres were allergic to possession.
Too many D-to-D passes required recovery by the receiving d-man either because the pass was off target or flubbed requiring retreat and recovery, whether with or without a reverse. I don't expect perfection, but that errant passing and flubs were happening in all three zones, all afternoon.
On the good side, I don't feel as though the Sabres gave TB a lot of sustained zone time. I don't think TB took the game / win from BUF as much as BUF gave it to TB. And, in general, BUF did a good job defending / tieing up players in the slot / crease. Yes, the Lightning had their chances but I didn't see TB getting whack after whack at the puck down low more than a few times. Kucherov was not a threat from what I remember. Lastly, I didn't see Sabres getting caught deep in the ozone on a change in possession as much as I've often seen in other games this season. Yes, it happened, but it wasn't the chronic sin they've committed in many prior games.
Second and Third the Sabres did a better job in general, but were still largely allergic to putting someone in the low-slot / crease, even on PP.
Sabres had too many offensive rushes where they we forced wide and didn't drive the net until at the faceoff circle hashmarks. When they did drive the slot, they were noticeably more dangerous.
On the scoreboard replay, Benson didn't even touch JJ with his stick. To be fair, I'm not sure the Tampa trip on Quinn should have been called.
And the hook on Tuch was borderline. Mittelstadt's penalty was pretty weak too.
Low energy game. Disappointed they didn't win for the kids, but they never looked threatening all afternoon.
