Tage just doesn’t have enough to offer to a game when he’s not on offensively, and quite frankly you can’t have that in your “#1 center“.
The problem is, he's not a smart player at all. He relies on his crazy possession ability to create for his very good shot. When the effort is not there he just gives the puck away constantly.

The Sabres are a country club. They were more upset about fans chanting "Fire Donny" than their embarrassingly bad play and stealing people's hard earned money in the process. In fact they no longer salute fans after their rare wins because they are still mad over that. No one in the entire Buffalo media with the exception of Tim Graham will ever have the balls to point this out.

That's exactly why the franchise can kiss my ass. I'm tired of wasting my time on a franchise that doesn't seem to want to win and doesn't want to change that. How long is this shit supposed to last? How long do you want to appease the fans after another early end to the season? This is a never-ending cycle. 14 years are enough! I'm tired of watching this antihockey.
Nothing changes. This is a losing franchise, nothing more. Reinhart, Echel, Ristolainen, ROR etc. noticed this and pulled the line in good time.

I’m getting sick of looking at the Tage Thompson’s and Alex Tuch’s of the world.
I truly believe that they can improve with better direction. We've seen them be better.

The team defense has improved over last season but at the tremendous expense of offense. And if that was the plan all along, why sign players to long term deals after a known bloated statistical season? I'm looking at you, Owen.

Are players not doing what they're asked to do or are they not sure what to do or are they incapable of executing plays and systems? I suppose that's the crux of the "who's fault is it" debate.

There's an effort problem some nights, no doubt. More nights and more players than what should be considered excusable but...

Not ready for the season, not ready for most games, poorly executed systems, underachieving team and individuals, little to no growth from young players...
For me it always comes down to a leadership issue no matter which angle I look at it from and the notion that there wouldn't be a change because DG is recently resigned is heartbreaking.

I didn't notice that. Is that true?
If so, first, poor form and shitty business decision to exacerbate a petty tift with the fans.
Second, whether a player is unprepared, out of position, out of shape or just not good enough, it's your coaches fault for not preparing and teaching you better and then allowing you to make the same loser mistakes.

It was mentioned during game time but I would love to see someone sit for a period or even a game or two for some of the awful plays we've subjected ourselves to. Maybe then the fans would leave the coaches alone and call for player's heads. OR...be f***ing successful and then nobody would complain. Such a baby response from a soft loser room...if true

It has become apparent that Don G, as ani e a guy as he seems to be, has reached his ceiling as a coach for this team. It is also apparent that many of the players being part of KA’s plan are not really part of the solution. So to start the process they need a new leader behind the bench. But that begs the question of who of the level of quality will take that job when they know roster repair is needed? And who will want to take the job to work with a GM with little substantive success to show for his current tenure? KA can fire DG but it apparent Terry is perfectly content with KA running the show. Maybe Quennville and all his baggage would like another shot, but that seems antithetical to the image conscious Pegulas.

So without a quality coaching staff, and a GM amenable to adjusting his long term build plan, is there really any reason to expect anything to change?

The way forward is clear as day. But the only person who can do anything about it is currently preoccupied until the earliest Monday and the latest February 11. And is there any reason to believe he will get it right in his 5th try?

I believe the discussion Bakes and Fairburn had discussing the Vancouver turnaround should be the focal point. This season is toast, but you better ready to hit the ground running in October for a playoffs or bust push.

Pretty hard to argue Mitts is the “3rd center”

He’s playing 1:30 to 2mins more a night 5v5 than Tage or Cozens. He’s also outproducing both them at 5v5 by a decent amount. The funny thing is Tage/Cozens are always getting the better offensive wingers when the team is healthy. They should be easily outproducing him as the “top 2 centers”. Mitts has had a rotating cast of wingers and some stints on wing himself.

What type of vet center do you want?

I agree we could use a vet center or two. Certainly a 4th liner, but it would be ridiculous to trade Mitts for one. We could use a top 6 one as well to pair with Mitts, not trade him for. Slide Tage to wing and Cozens to the 3rd line with a defensive focus.

A defensive minded C, to anchor a two way third line. The Tage and the Cozens lines will be offensively driven.

Also, It doesnt have to be Mitts for that player straight up in a trade. But he is a good trade piece.

Not saying the coaches make the right moves, but the fact the best wingers are with Tage and Cozens says to me that Mitts is the 3rd C.

The way I see things, this team needs changes in the top 9 and moving on for Mitts is a good chance, unless you unload/buyout Skinner. But keeping both leaves just 1 open spot for change in the top 9 which is probably not enough of a change.

I watched this one on delay with a lot of fast forwarding. Looked like they actually played ok, but a couple of bad turnovers and no ability to finish. Moneypuck appears to agree:

In the Panderverse
Wife and I were at the game (lost).
Went to Seneca Buffalo Creek casino next door for first time (lost).
Went to an early (for us) dinner (wasn't as good as last time).
Really needing a Bills win to salvage the w/e.

My observations:
We were 1st row 300s behind the TB bench (halfway between the center red line and blue line).
Anthem sisters were awesome.
Definitely kids day in the crowd.
Wife got a couple selfie shots with Sabretooth (a couple rows behind us).

1st period was not good.
Sabres had no jump, no burst.
A couple flubs of the puck and boom, down 2-0 after only 3 or 4 shots against.
Tampa was moving as a unit. Their forecheck was more coordinated and was a stride closer than Buffalo's the whole game. In the first half of the game, I never felt BUF's forecheck was a threat / pressure to the Lightning.

Dahlin and Clifton were the only ones with any velocity on their shots all night.
I thought Clifton and Peterka had a good game.
In contrast, Power had a rough night - positionally, skating, anticipating. I continue to be unimpressed with Power. I know when he is good, he is noticeably good, but when he's not good, he's bad. There is little middle-ground with him in brian_griffin's gradebook.

Sabres had no urgency on most of their line changes.

There were times where 28-19-21 or 71-28-21 had some possession in the second, but could get it worked out front for decent looks/shots.

Passing / possession in general was poor for the first half of the game, and below average after that. Someone earlier in the thread noted the same - passing to a space the teammate can't reach in time, passing to the body instead of the stick, forcing passess through tight coverage resulting in turnovers. Dumping mindlessly. It's like the Sabres were allergic to possession.

Too many D-to-D passes required recovery by the receiving d-man either because the pass was off target or flubbed requiring retreat and recovery, whether with or without a reverse. I don't expect perfection, but that errant passing and flubs were happening in all three zones, all afternoon.

On the good side, I don't feel as though the Sabres gave TB a lot of sustained zone time. I don't think TB took the game / win from BUF as much as BUF gave it to TB. And, in general, BUF did a good job defending / tieing up players in the slot / crease. Yes, the Lightning had their chances but I didn't see TB getting whack after whack at the puck down low more than a few times. Kucherov was not a threat from what I remember. Lastly, I didn't see Sabres getting caught deep in the ozone on a change in possession as much as I've often seen in other games this season. Yes, it happened, but it wasn't the chronic sin they've committed in many prior games.

Second and Third the Sabres did a better job in general, but were still largely allergic to putting someone in the low-slot / crease, even on PP.

Sabres had too many offensive rushes where they we forced wide and didn't drive the net until at the faceoff circle hashmarks. When they did drive the slot, they were noticeably more dangerous.

On the scoreboard replay, Benson didn't even touch JJ with his stick. To be fair, I'm not sure the Tampa trip on Quinn should have been called.
And the hook on Tuch was borderline. Mittelstadt's penalty was pretty weak too.

Low energy game. Disappointed they didn't win for the kids, but they never looked threatening all afternoon.

UPL has stopped 82 of 85 shots over the last 4 games and the Sabres are just 2-2-0 despite that.

Absolute dogshit team. Congrats Kevyn, it's all yours.
Just about the least qualified hire in NHL history. Maybe Pegula can replace him with Conehead the beer vendor.

At least Conehead would have the knowledge of how much it pains the fans to miss the playoffs…That’s also why he would never be hired by Terry.
