Can't say I'm surprised. That always seemed more like a Frankenstein's Monster of an amalgamation between two halves likely unwilling to share control. Not to mention that even such a combined league would be an SEC and/or Big Ten raid away from collapsing in on itself.

The more likely scenario would be either of them trying to raid mid majors to try to keep their bottoms from falling out. There will be no replacement for Texas/Oklahoma or USC/UCLA, but some decent add-ons can buy them some time.

Have to figure that the Pac is going to go after Boise and SDSU, while the Big 12 makes runs at the Arizona schools, Utah, Colorado, and maybe Washington and Oregon. A lot is going to depend on what the Pac gets in their TV contract on which one is more likely to play out.

Don’t be surprised if there’s no other moves to the Pac or the Big 12. If someone was obvious to add to the per school payout, it would have happened already.

Problem is the PAC adding SDSU and Boise doesn’t do much for the PAC TV contract and becomes an immediate signal of distress.

I think the PAC is better off trying to hold together the current 10 schools if possible. We’ve seen before—most notably with the Big East and Big 12—that backfilling school departures usually dilutes the conference overall, encouraging the remaining top schools to leave when possible.

Just a technicality…

old big east split. American Athletic were the large big east schools with D-1 football. The smaller schools who play lower D-1 non bowl or D2 kept the big east name and filled up the conference by pulling basketball teams from Atlantic 10, Missouri valley, horizon, and other leagues.

I was talking about the old Big East where departures of BC, Miami, VaTech, WV, Rutgers and Louisville contributed to conference instability and eventually the big basketball split.

The other factor in this was the drive to have 12 football teams in order to have a championship game.

the basketball only school had issues in the conference being too big and thr push toward football would hurt basketball. This started thrm talking of splitting off first before these schools started to leave.

The NCAA will never again have the power to determine how conferences arrive at championships. The reorganizing currently underway will see to that. A fair amount of this discussion is about to be moot.

Will be a good thing, the whole conference divisions concept was a dumb Idea. Frequently delivering championship games between #1 and #4 or worse in a conference.
