I remember Ovechkin just destroying the NHL before the Olympic break that season and then when they returned it was like he became a ghost..for his standards anyways

20 points in 18 games after the Olympics with only 8 goals. Still good but clearly subpar to the level he was at before the break. Here's a brief run down of his insane play before the Olympics:
  • Leading the NHL in scoring with 89 points in only 54 games. 2nd was H. Sedin at 80 points, but he had played 61 games.
  • Led the league in PPG with 1.65. Second closest was 1.31 (H. Sedin)
  • Tied for the league lead in goals with Crosby at 42 (played 7 fewer games than Crosby 54-61)
  • Led the league in GPG at 0.78
  • Led the league in ES goals (32)
  • Led the league in ES points (61)
He was playing like a hockey god at that point.

Now with this one, it’s clearly Ovechkin.

I don’t forget that Jagr sulked and played a very disinterested game after demanding a trade prior to the season and then again mid way through.

It took Mario coming out of retirement to placate him and light a fire under his ass. Mario was literally responsible for pushing Jagr to 121 and the scoring crown. There’s a reason why Mario finished second to Sakic in Hart voting.

Ovechkin.

The last time he was an incredible force. How I miss that incredible 3 year stretch and this was the very last of it.

He missed the Art Ross and Rocket by a mere goal and a few points. He finished 2nd in Hart voting and won the Pearson/Lindsay.

As mentioned, he came back from the Olympic break like a ghost, missed the 10 games, 4-6 due to suspensions I believe, and just a shade above 1 PPG after rocking it at a 1.65 PPG clip for 2/3 of the season.

Firmly Ovechkin for me. People either forget or don’t know the context of how Jagr won the Art Ross that season. It matters.

It's clearly OV. People will look at "oh Jagr won 4 consecutive rosses from 98-01" but forget that 01 was very different than the previous 3. Jagr won that ross because Lemieux came out of retirement.

Best player in the league (without Lemieux to boost stats) > not the best player in the league (despite having Lemieux boosted stats)

Jagr was also just 3 points ahead of 2nd place, which is by far the smallest margin hes had (vs 2nd place)

*99 he was 2 pts ahead of Bure, but he also missed 1/4 of the season. If he plays a full season, he blows Bure out of the water.

Jagr was pretty substandard the first half of the season, and Lemieux helped him substantially in the second half. Would pick 98-99 Jagr over 09-10 Ovechkin but not 00-01 Jagr.

That's more on how good Sakic's season was than Jagr's though. 3rd place Elias was 25 points back

Him and Sakic were quite ahead of 3rd place though, although if Lemieux played the full season he would've been up there as well.

While Lemieux was on pace for that, not sure his body withstands a full season, especially in his mid 30s. Even after resting for 3 years.

Part of the reason his numbers dropped later in the season is that the OV-Backstrom-Semin line was no longer used. They absolutely shredded other teams, scoring over 6 goals per 60 minutes 5v5. Aside from his success with that line, OV's production was in line with the other seasons of his prime.
