Edmonton would not trade Nurse for Hughes straight up even though Hughes is the better player. Understandably the Canucks wouldn’t do that trade either. Hughes is the better talent but he brings a specific skill set. Nurse has a universal skill set.

Again, I think Hughes is better if we are comparing them 1:1 but not sure why this is becoming a shitshow comparing the two. Hughes is not good defensively, he sucks at it. EK wasn’t great either and we consider him an all timer. Nurse is basically good at everything but not elite at anything.

When you have McDrai you don’t need a Hughes like talent.
Except Nurse is below average defensively also

The Oilers could be the best defensive team in the Western Conference next year.

Nurse - Top 10D
Ceci - good #2D
Bouchard - good #3 & growing
Barrie - offensive 3/4 D
Kulak - defensive #4D

Five top 4D & one of the best defenders in the game. Plus Broberg who's poised to take a huge step, and Campbell who was a Vezina contender last season.

This post is either full of sarcasm or complete delusion.

On the mains? Or the Canuck board? I would've thought that'd be closer. 76 votes seems low too! Eg. we're at over 300 votes on this topic.lol
On the mains, mods are usually pretty quick to lock when they get overly lopsided.

This has stayed open longer because it’s like deciding who’s the better of the worst 😅. Neither defensive core is anything to write home about

Looks like a lot of arguing over the 15th best vs 16th best D core in a 32 team league to me.lol

I'd concede that Nurse is better than Hughes defensively. Nurse is deployed to shutdown top players - he's a good defenseman probably top 20.

I just get annoyed by all the 'Hughes is a tire fire defensively' or 'Hughes is bad in his own end'. That's certainly incorrect and I suggest to those that have this opinion to watch how efficient Hughes can be in his own end. It's willfully stupid to try to suggest to Canuck fans that Hughes is 'bad' defensively.
He is efficient if he has the puck on his stick...

It’s been explained over and over why Hughes is good in his own zone. Edmonton fans just don’t want to accept it. And if you are Edmonton, you definitely trade Nurse for Hughes. You could get a haul for Hughes if he doesn’t fit a certain role in Edmonton.

Again. You don’t know what you are talking about. Unless you are just trolling.?

Wow! That Hughes vs Nurse poll got locked quickly for one sidedness.
Imagine trying to argue that a low end number one/high end number two is better than a high end number one. Neither is great defensively but Hughes had almost twice as many points last year.
And keep in mind Hughes is only 22 and still improving while Nurse is 27 and likely at his peak.
While both D groups are weak, you can make a strong case for preferring Edmonton. But comparing Nurse to Hughes isn’t part of that case.

Hughes is the better rover and passer. Nurse the better at defence.

Yeah no matter how many times you repeat that nonsense no ones buying it. 😆
You should have just said Hughes is the better D and left it at that. One guys top 10 already and only 22 years old. The other guy is 27 and likely at his peak. Neither guy is great defensively but Hughes put up twice the points and has improved defensively and will likely continue to do so. The gap is only likely to grow.

Hughes is absolutely not a rover. People think because he is so good offensively that he plays like Burns?

He is mostly focused on being the last man back, and his biggest strength is puck retrieval and escape. If there's any criticism to be made, it's that he could be more aggressive, and take chances to score goals himself.

Besides these random homer Oilers fans, everyone pretty much has cleared it up that Hughes is the significantly better player than Nurse. On a whole another tier. No point in wasting time.

Neither d-core of these is that impressive. This thread should've ended weeks ago.

I don't care if you but it, the numbers show it. Keep your head in the sand if you like. Nurse was significantly better defensively last year.

So good offensively yet had 3 more ESP than Nurse over the past 3 years?

I’ve always stated Hughes is the better talent but Canuck fans have severely overstated how good he actually is.

At this point it’s only a couple of Oiler homers pushing the narrative that Nurse is close to Hughes. Best just to ignore them.

Lol at the hordes of Nucks fans saying Hughes is currently better defensively than Nurse.

Could he get better? Sure.

Is he better (AT DEFENSE) right now? No. And the numbers prove it.

You can't possibly believe that Darnell Nurse is better in any way/shape/form than Quinn Hughes..........can you?

Too funny.
