It was the 85 playoffs. Jets had the 4th best record in the league & were the hottest team in the NHL down the stretch undefeated in their last 13 games. They also beat the dynasty Oilers in their final 3 regular season meetings (6-2, 6-3, 6-5)Wasn't it 1985 or 86 we all thought we'd win the cup...?
That roster featured the leagues 2nd most potent offense, a league record "6" 30 goal scores (Hawerchuk, MacLean, Boschman, Steen, Mullen & Smail), a rock solid defense of Babych, Carlyle, Ellett, Picard & Watters and Brian Hayward in net.
Riding a now 15 game unbeaten streak & up 2-0 in their first round series against Calgary, that streak ended after Jamie Macoun's vicious cross-check to Hawerchuk. Jets still won that series but were swept by the Oilers, although 3 of the 4 games were close even without the runner up for the Hart Trophy & the 2nd team All Star centre in their lineup.
