Best Team-Mate Team?

What's the best team that could be constructed from just one player and the players he has played with over his NHL career?

The obvious choice would be Paul Coffey. Of the 20 players with highest career point totals, 13 were team mates of Coffey's.

But is there another player whose career team would better than Coffey's?

Here's my Coffey team:

Robitaille Gretzky Kurri
Jagr Lemieux Lindros
Messier Trottier Recchi
Larionov Yzerman Fedorov

Chelios Robinson
Murphy Lidstrom
Coffey Fetisov

Hextall
Osgood

Coach: Scotty Bowman

Other possible inclusions on Team Coffey: Francis, Hawerchuk, Gilmour, Thornton, Lang, Konstantinov, Tikkanen, Anderson, Mark Howe, Vernon, Blake, Probert, Brind'Amour

Is it possible to construct a better team? How would a team consisting of only players that have played with Paul Coffey in the NHL fare against a team of players that haven't?

I don't like your goaltenders. Grant Fuhr and Tom Barrasso would both be better options than Hextall, keeping with the Team Coffey theme.

Honestly, I can't think of a better possible player than Coffey for something like this. He played with both Gretzky and Lemieux, then became a journeyman, stopping at Detroit along the way.

I realize he's a weak member of the HOF, but I would include Clarke Gillies, as well.

Here's the Frank Mahovlich team:

Mahovlich Delvecchio Howe
Kennedy Richard Lafleur
Moore Keon Bathgate
Gainey Lemaire Cournoyer

Kelly Arbour
Robinson Savard
Horton Stanley

Sawchuk
Dryden

I might have missed someone, did it rather quickly.

The Larry Hillman Team (counting WHA):

Lindsay Delvecchio Howe
Mahovlich Beliveau Hull
Bucyk Ullman Perreault
Ramsay Clarke Richard

Kelly Savard
Horton Stanley
Hillman Boivin

Sawchuk
Hall

Forwards and goal are very good, but defence is nowhere near Coffey's team.

Now we're talking! That's one silly looking first line. Too bad he doesn't make his own team though.

The Mark Howe Team:

Hull Yzerman G.Howe
Brind'Amour Francis Recchi
Keon Fedorov Ciccarelli
Probert Clarke Sittler

Lidstrom M.Howe
Coffey Konstantinov
McCrimmon Fetisov

Also noticed that Mike Rogers played with Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe AND Wayne Gretzky. That'd be an ok first line I suppose.

I suspected Bert Olmstead's team to be quite good...

Frank Mahovlich - Jean Béliveau - Maurice Richard
Dickie Moore - Henri Richard - Bernard Geoffrion
Doug Bentley - Elmer Lach - Claude Provost
Roy Conacher - Dave Keon - Ed Litzenberger

Doug Harvey - Red Kelly
Bill Gadsby - Tim Horton
Jack Stewart - Butch Bouchard

Jacques Plante
Johnny Bower

I don't think that this D can get any better for a 50'ies guy.

If you count Tonelli's WHA days he gets to add Gordie and Mark Howe.

Kurri-Gretzky-G. Howe
Robitaille-Trottier-Bossy
Sundin-Sakic-Brett Hull
Gillies-Roenick-Mullen

Potvin-Robinson
Chelios-MacInnis
M. Howe-Blake

Belfour
B. Smith

This team is definitely behind the Coffey team as far as Forwards are concerned, but I think they have better Defense and for sure Goaltending

Brett Hull's team would look pretty elite as well some playing out of position though

Robitaille-Gretzky-Hull
Shanahan-Yzerman- Fedorov (had to fit him somewhere)
Hawerchuk-Oates-Mullen
Modano-Gilmour-McDonald

Lidstrom-Pronger
MacInnis-Suter
Zubov-Hatcher

Hasek
Belfour

Others: Federko, Janney, Larionov, Nieuwendyk, Roberts, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Vernon, Joseph, Doan

Euhh, Big Phil..would that not be ``HULL & OATES``??

I was just doing the "pecking order" thing. Obviously a prime Gretzky (I assume we are going by prime) would be the first line center. Hull would be fine with Oates though of course as we saw

team bucyk

lindsay delvecchio howe
cashman esposito hodge
bucyk ratelle leach
o'reilly ullman middleton

orr johnson
kelly park
pronovost flaman

(stanley boivin)

plante
hall

(parent
lumley
cheevers)

offensively not nearly as deep as team coffey, but you could stack a pretty fantastic top six of lindsay, delvecchio, howe, bucyk, esposito, and ratelle/ullman out of position. the top three d-men are probably the best possible "teammate" top three, plus tom johnson, who knows a thing or two about playing alongside an all-time great, and a handful of lower tier hall of famers (i don't know too much about any of these guys and where they rank relative to one another, so i counted post-season all-star selections).

in goal, wow. bernie parent doesn't make this team.

he also played for milt schmidt and with al arbour (and glen sather). if we could get schmidt the player and arbour the coach, what a team.

Team Bucyk:

Not to mention UKE Linemates Bronco Horvath & Vic Stasiuk...Or the later Unit of Bucyk, Don McKenney, Doug Mohns...The BOW Line of Bucyk, Murray Oliver and Tommy Williams was also quite proficient on what was a weak team in the midst of reconstruction...

It's 2:30 am, so I'm hardly driven enough to hash this out, but for some reason a Team Lidstrom seems intriguing to me. Despite having only Detroit to choose from (obviously), you do get all the free agent signings along the way like Robitaille, Shanahan, Ciccarelli, Sheppard, etc. and era overlap nets you Yzerman and Fedorov (Coffey, Primeau, M.Howe being bonus prizes). Heck, you even get to throw Hasek in there for goaltending if you like.

Sakic could be another boring yet impressive team (everyone from Stastnys, Goulets, Lafleurs, to Sundins, to Roys, to Forsbergs, etc).

Ok, I try one mine.
Nobody mentioted Chris Dinosaurus Chelios..

Brendan Shanahan - Steve Yzerman - Brett Hull
Michel Goulet - Denis Savard -Guy Lafleur
Luc Robitaille - Sergej Fedorov - Bernie Nicholls
Steve Shutt - Pavel Dacjuk - Zetterberg
Igor Larionov

Larry Robinson - Doug Wilson
Gary Suter - Nicklas Lidstrom
Larry Murphy - Eric Desjardins
Craig Ludwig

Dominik Hasek
Patrick Roy
Ed Belfour

HM:
Mats Naslund, Claude Lemieux, J. Roenick, BoB Gainey, Bobby Smith, Guy Carbonneau, Bernie Nicholls, Alexei Zhamnov, Stephane J.J. Richer, Steve Larmer, Tony Amonte, Mathieu Schneider,

I have problems with fourth line left wing... Dont know if Shutt or Mats Naslund and dont know if Kovalchuk is right. They never met each other on the ice in same jersey in a regular game.

You would never beat me with my goalies :P
