Both players had over 100% more points than the next leading scorer on the Pens (31 to 15). That must be one of the greatest 1-2 punches in playoff history. I thought Howe/Lindsay or Orr/Espo might have done the same but they weren't close.

Any other candidates?

Problem with the "1-2 punch" is that many great teams had more than only 2 great players. There isn't a "1-2 punch" on the 1950s Montreal dynasty; too many of them could qualify.

I'd say the best playoff duo of all-time is Jean Béliveau and Henri Richard.

2000 Stanley Cup Finals Game 6 run in 2000:

Hull 24
Modano 23
Nieuwendyk 10

Hull had 11 goals, Modano 10 and only one other player had more than 2 (Joe; the three had more goals combined than the entire rest of the team!).

Both players had over 100% more points than the next leading scorer... I thought Howe/Lindsay.. might have done...
In a 1963 Wings Stanley Cup Finals run, Detroit post-Lindsay came close:

Howe 16
Ullman 16
Delvecchio 9

The next highest point getter was some nobody Jeffrey with 3 goals, 3 assists.

If it had been a higher scoring era or if they played more rounds like the modern age, Gordie & Norm surely would have widened the gap.

Similar to the Wings in '63...

The Blackhawks in 1944 made a Stanley Cup Finals run largely on the backs of two HHOFers:

Doug Bentley 12
Clint Smith 12

Only one other skater had more than 4 points (a nobody Allen with 9).

The 1927 Stanley Cup champion Ottawa Senators had two offensive finishers:

Denneny 5 goals
Finnigan 3 goals
Four others with 1 goal each.

(Frugal assist-giving might have limited to 1 each: Frank Nighbor, King Clancy, Hooley Smith.)

Honorable mention:

The Avs in 2002 made a conference finals Game 7 run against the Wings.

Forsberg 27
Sakic 19
Tanguay 13

If Joe could have continued the beast mode of his Olympic gold medal victory that February then the duo would surely have beaten Detroit, the cup champions.

One of the most staggering playoff 1-2 punches in Stanley Cup history was centers Federko and Gilmour as the league leaders in playoff points even though their Blues team never even made it to the Stanley Cup Finals series!

(Of course they each set up no name right wingers for goals and had an offensive dman, but still, that is an accomplishment I doubt any duo will do again.)

same goes for Middleton and Pederson in 1983.

Middleton: 11-22-33
Pederson: 14-18-32

Both in only 17 games as the Bruins lost in the conference finals.

They were 2nd and 3rd in playoff scoring despite that (2nd only to some guy named Gretzky)

Best 1-2 punch in terms of total playoff points:

In 1985 Gretzky & Coffey combined for a record 84 points.

Their finals opponent Flyers top duo of Propp and Kerr had a combined 32 points.

This thread totally flatters MALKIN.

What an all-time dominant great stuck in the shadow of the Canadian hero.

They each have shone and the Pens have benefitted. (Gretzky in LA in 1989 and 1993 wasn't so lucky as to have a Malkin 2nd punch to back him up in the playoff push.)

I think that Gretzky/Messier was probably the best playoff 1-2 punch ever, regardless of the random "before Crosby/Malkin" qualifier, though the OP seems to be specifying some pairings that received little offensive support from teammates.

It just means they had no support, not that they were a great 1-2 punch.

The 2 aren't mutually exclusive are they?

That being said, I'm not sure what the entire point was in the OP.

You know when you put 99 and 11 together you get 110. Then putting 19 and 91 together you get 110 aswell.

Those are my two picks for centers all time.

I'm pretty sure they're the only players to get 30+ pts in the playoffs and have over 100% more pts than the 3rd best scorer on their team..
