Well... from the period that was covered in this old thread, what I got is this:

2000: Combat d'amour en songe
2001: What Time Is it There?
2002: Distant
2003: The Brown Bunny [?!]
2004: Notre musique
2005: Caché
2006: Windows On Monday
2007: Import Export [?!]
2008: Revanche [?!]
2009: Antichrist
2010: ...
2011: Once Upon A Time In Anatolia [?!]

The [?!] indicates great films that I know for a fact are certainly not the best of the year. And 2010 and anything above 2011, I really haven't seen much decent movies.

2010 is when I stopped teaching film. It really shows.
Love the list.

But.....you actually prefer Brown Bunny in 2003 over Memories of Murder; Goodbye, Dragon Inn; Old Boy; Lost in Translation; and Elephant, for examples?

Glad to see this thread bumped after all this time.

I've added these films to my original list. Hard to believe that it has been five years

2019: Parasite, Bong, South Korea
2020: Nomadland, Zhao, US
2021: Memoria, Weerasethakul, Columbia
2022: The Banshees of Inisherin, McDonagh, Ireland
2023: Riceboy Sleeps, Shim, Canada (so far)

And I've revised my list of NA films to comply with #silkyjohnson50's original request that I just list NA movies as I had a three English-language films not made in NA on my original list. I didn't notice the error at the time.
I've seen 3 of these 5 films, and I wouldn't be comfortable with any of them as "best of the year". Is it me or it's really weak? Preferred Marriage Story to Parasite, preferred (thanks to you) The Trouble With Being Born to Nomadland, preferred (by a huge margin) Aftersun to Banshees. And I wouldn't be comfortable with the first two as "best" either. Pretty sure there was better films somewhere.
Love the list.

Haven't seen Memories of Murder, but for the other ones, absolutely. I have Elephant at 9/10 like Brown Bunny, but Gallo's sensibility is really effective with me. Same with his songs. I have Les côtelettes, Ce jour-là, and The Dreamers pretty much on par with Old Boys and Goodbye. Lost in Translation would be lower than that. None of these films feel like a "best of the year" though.

2000: In the Mood for Love
2001: Mulholland Drive
2002: Blue Gate Crossing
2003: The Best of Youth
2004: Before Sunset
2005: The New World
2006: Summer Palace
2007: There Will Be Blood
2008: Still Walking
2009: Police, Adjective
2010: Somewhere
2011: A Separation
2012: The Master
2013: Under the Skin
2014: The Grand Budapest Hotel
2015: Mad Max: Fury Road
2016: The World of Us
2017: Blade Runner 2049
2018: Burning
2019: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
2020: The Woman Who Ran
2021: Drive My Car
2022: After Yang
2023: Past Lives

Feels like I have at least three or four of those [?!] selections on there. Might be a good incentive to try and find something better in those particular years.

I was this close to going with Aftersun, but then thought I was in danger of doing what I sometimes do, letting a great performance, in this case by Paul Mescal, elevate a very good movie a bit higher than it should be.

I thought the film was brilliant. I probably posted about it on here somewhere.
