All time?

Does Gio not count even?

Even if Gio doesn't count, and as much as I love Hudler, it's a little depressing he was our best FA in our franchise history.
Free agent signings better than Hudler IMO:

Jamie Macoun
Colin Patterson
Joel Otto
Martin Gelinas
Mark Giordano
Roman Hamrlik
Cory Sarich
Curtis Glencross

Potentially better:

Michael Frolik
Troy Brouwer

I agree. It's always best to build through the draft.

Build through the draft for sure, but if you want to win a championship you have to supplement your drafting and development with free agent signings and trades. No championship team was built though the draft alone.

Raitis Ivanans deserves consideration for this.

Played one game in each of the two seasons he signed for, which the Flames lost by a combined score of 13-1. Attempted one fight and got knocked out for a year and a half.

As a small to medium sized market, it's not surprising the Flames don't have a great free agent history.

Counting all free agent signings, Giordano's easily the best. Sticking to the free agent frenzy in July, it's probably Glencross, especially as the second round pick he brought back helped acquire Hamilton while the third round pick was used to trade up to draft Kylington.

Agreed on both counts. Glencross, especially on that contract, was close to the ideal FA signing. Good two-way supporting player, borderline top 6, with a relatively unique skillset, who signed a dream of a contract (until the final season of it, anyway). Plus he came from the Oilers, which makes his success here all the sweeter.

For me Joel Otto

Calgary's answer for Messier was huge.

Yes, the Flames were the pioneer in signing college FA

Otto, Macoun, Patterson...etc were all great addition to the cup winning team

Cliff Fletcher was a genius...too bad all the ones after him were idiots with Risebrough and Button leading the way
