Worst: It's so easy to say Sather here, but I don't think Sather ever really cost us anything besides pride. John Ferguson's Middleton trade or Fred Shero's failure to get a good return on Espo and Vadnais are just...inexcusably worse during a time where we should have won a cup.

1. Boucher is a good coach. Melrose, yeah, I could see it, but at least he didn't play LHD Nikita Nesterov at RW.

Just going to go recent for this one (ie. this century) for Boston.

Coaching hiring: Best - Julien - You could argue it was the best hiring in team history.
Worst - Dave Lewis - Unmitigated disaster for that one year - definitely worth firing him after one season.

GM hiring: Best - Massively responsible for that Cup win, even if things fell apart a bit later in his tenure.
Worst - Sweeney - O'Connell wasn't anything great, but Sweeney has made some bizarre decisions. Hasn't been in the job long enough to get a full evaluation, but I'm not liking what I'm seeing.

Trade: Best - Rask - Maybe another trade contributed more directly to the Cup win, but Rask for Raycroft was too much of a lopsided trade to not put here. Franchise goalie for a goalie that burned out completely.
Worst - There's more than a few that look awful at first glance, but really didn't affect the Bruins much in the grand scheme of things. I'd probably go with the Seguin trade just due to none of those pieces except for Morrow (who has been underwhelming) being left on the team, and the Bruins only had mild success for one season without Seguin.

1st round draft pick: Best - Pastrnak - Players like Seguin, Kessel and Hamilton were considered layups for who the Bruins should pick at the time. I'd go a bit deeper into the draft with Pastrnak, who is just starting to take off.
Worst - Hamill - I wanted to make a case for Subban just because the Bruins should have known better in 2012 to draft an iffy goalie like Subban in the 1st, but I can't argue against Hamill.

2nd round or later draft pick: Best - Bergeron for sure.
Worst - Jared Knight - Big reach at the time and it didn't pay off at all.

Free agent signing: Best - Chara - Pretty rare that you can get a cornerstone franchise d-man through free-agency, but that's exactly what happened for the Bruins in 2006.
Worst - McQuaid - Bruins didn't really have any albatross contracts in the cap era (they did have Lapointe before the lockout though), and there are others you could argue deserve this more than McQuaid, but my problem with this is that it was completely unnecessary. Bottom pairing D-man that is very easily replaced.
