Premise: Rangers should move Andersson [hitch their wagon to Chytil], and some vets and swap picks to upgrade w/mo/better draft selections. Seems they can acquire picks 2-5. Basis for each trade in following posts so OP is not too large.
==================
1. Zibanejad 5.35 x 4 + Andersson elc + Buchnevich elc + G Georgiev elc .792,500 x 2 + Rangers 2018 3rd [70OA] to CAROLINA for Canes 2018 1st = 2OA + 2018 2nd = 42OA + Hanfin rfa + G Darling 4.15 x 4 + RD McKeown .745 x 2
5 for 5 assets, cap close enough to neutral
2. Skjei rfa + 9OA [NYR 1st] + 39OA [Rangers 2nd] + 48OA [Devils 2nd]
for Mon. 1st 3OA + Mon. 2019 1st unprotected
Explanation: the core deal has Skjei + 9OA going for 3OA +. The + by Mon. is required or no deal. Habs are split but due to min depth seem leaning to deal 3OA if there is both a considerable piece AND a top 10 this draft coming back. Return from NYR fits the bill, but something more needs to go to NY.
Until it is clear EXACTLY what is a better fit for the balance of that deal, the bold is a placeholder. IF Mon. surrenders next year’s 1st, Rangers would surrender both those 2nds this year. The rationale there is Skjei is worth betw. 5-9OA so 3OA is more, NY has to add, the 2018 1st, is presumed to be equal to next year, but this year is a better draft and NY has to wait; so Habs add. But they are not equal adds, hence Rangers add 2 2nds this year.
Again, bold is a placeholder of something to be determined.
Both sides likely reasonable enuf, negotiate to finalize a deal with the core + something to be determined.
3. Zucarello 4.5 expiring to Calgary for rights to RD Fox, with conditional add on applicable 2021 covering small chance if he walks.
4. TB 2018 1st [28OA] + NYR 2019 1st + TB 2019 2nd [can morph into a 1st] + Marc Staal 5.7 x 3 to Sens for OTT 2018 1st 4OA + cap dump W Ryan, 7.25m x 4.
5. Pionk elc + Namest. rfa + Boston 2018 1st [26OA] for AZ 2018 1st [5OA]
6. DeAngelo elc + Spooner rfa + NYR 2020 2nd for BUF 2018 2nd [32OA] + 2019 2nd
7. Smith 4.35 at half =2.175 x 3 + (righty RD prospect) Zbrovsky elc to NASHVILLE for RD Subban [9m x 4]
8. Something with Dallas around Bigras for Pitlick
COMMENTS:
There is a temptation to delve even farther off the deep end and do Ryan for Seabrook and 8OA+. It should be resisted, b’c more salary [only 6.875 but 2 extra yrs] aside, Seabs has less mobility than Ryan, whose biggest negative to his game is his hands. Seabs is more of a pylon and although it is a decent bet the next CBA around the corner will have at least one amnesty buyout, there is still a risk with any large contract being delayed until then.
Lundqvist does not want to leave NY and loves the Rangers. If he were willing to take one for the team, I would trade him to Islanders for the 11th and 12th OA selections they have this year, plus acceptable cap dump [possibly Ladd?]. The idea here is it would be the equivalent of presumably a 1 year rental. That is, Hank would agree to 1 yr, and no promises thereafter. He helps Isles on cup run, and can stay if he wants; if not, he returns by trade to Rangers, forcing LL’s hand by threatening to retire if nec.
At that time, Rangers would make deal w/Isles after next season for balance of Hank’s contract. If teams don’t agree on what that is per year given where Lundqvist will be [will his game have diminished noticeably by then or will he still more or less have it?] and also being stuck w/balance of Ladd contract, if applicable. If Lundqvist retires, no compensation, after suitable interval, he returns to Rangers. If he is dealt back to Rangers for final years they pay adequate compensation, as valued at that future time. That said I think Hank w/his NMC stays with NYR.
Summary Rangers acquire useful assets. Next season’s lineup does not have to do more than set up for competing the following one, so stop gap measures are fine. That said, NY acquires picks 2, 3, 4, 5 and 32OA for 2018 [32OA they may trade for a 2019 1st +], all presumed to be on the farm for the following year, plus additional assets.
Sign two placeholders: JVR, who wants to come here we think and can shoot, but defense? 1 yr small overpay 5.5-6m. Also return Grabner, top dollar at not 2 yrs same deal, but 1 yr, w/club option to extend 1 yr. Buyout clause if legal, probably safe not to break down over short term but take no unnecessary chance.
Roster:
Kreider - Nieves - JVR
Grabner - Hayes - Fast
Vesey - Chytil - Ryan
Gropp - Pitlick - Lettieri
reserves: FA stopgap, but Howden likely 2019 2nd half this season as 3C pushing Chytil to W.
pushing it: Ronning likely too far to go but if he shocks in camp, be ready
follow up: Also, post AV, give Kreider and Nieves a fair chance to see if they use their speed to get something extra – synergy!
Hanifin - Subban
stopgap - Shattenkirk
Gilmour - McKeown possibly Fox
reserves: stopgaps
pushing it: Rykov, Hajek, Lindgren, Day
follow up: assumes the above pushing it are not ready until late if at all this year. But as soon as they are, 2 LD slots are readily ready.
Hank [unless he consents to the extremely unlikely 1% scenario above]; Darling
follow up: once Allaire works his magic, move Darling to a team that has had an injury and must risk acquisition to not sacrifice season. We have enough good G prospects for Benny to refocus upon. We have ample netminder prospects we can experiment as backup if nec.
