A first-rate proposal by Oaklawn (Arkansas). This potentially changes the dynamics of the races significantly if altered. There are extended byproducts of the situation in southern Cal. If a split, Bob Baffert could send his top two runners (Game Winner and Improbable) to Arkansas and compete separately. Also, Los Alamitos, a much smaller facility than Santa Anita, has offered assistance with stabling.

Joel Rosario is moving his tack east at least temporarily.

Oaklawn to Split Rebel Stakes if Enough Interest - BloodHorse

The Oaklawn Jockey Club announced March 6 that it stands ready to split the $1 million Rebel Stakes March 16 into two divisions should 20 or more horses enter the 1 1/16-mile test. The announcement came just hours after Santa Anita officials suspended racing indefinitely at the Arcadia, Calif., racetrack.

If the Rebel is split, each division would carry a purse of $750,000 as the track is prepared to commit an additional $500,000. Each division would offer 63.75 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1). A Road to the Kentucky Derby race, the Rebel is scheduled as an 85-point race—50-20-10-5 to the top four finishers. Should it be split, the points awarded to the top four finishers in each division would be 37.5-15-7.5-3.75.

Flavien Prat has decided to ride Galilean (tr. Jerry Hollendorfer) in the Rebel rather than Omaha Beach (tr. Richard Mandella) who will now be ridden by Mike Smith. As of now, there is more known about Galilean than Omaha Beach. The Rebel Stakes is March 16, 2019 at Oaklawn.

March 7, 2019
  • A typical light racing day for a Wednesday this time of the calendar year.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Race 9: The 5 year-old winner improved to 5-for-51 lifetime with a terrific rally. Colorincolonel began her career 2-for-47 but has been on a little roll lately. Owned by effervescent Ron Paloucci.
  • Race 7: Locano (Gary Wales/Rick Creel) won, the second highest odds on the board at 25-to-1. The New Jersey bred began his career 0-for-12 but has since won his last two races. Wales has four wins at the meet in 69 starts, three have come in his past 14 mounts.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: One of my basic rules of handicapping. If John Velazquez has only one mount and it is late in the day, circle it. Highlight it. Bold it. Whatever. Cypriana, trained by Mark Hennig, had not been out since August at Saratoga and broke her maiden in her first try, was winless since. She went off 4-to-5. First time Johnny V. rode her.
  • Race 6: Summer Spice (Hector Barrios/Kathy Mongeon) won at 56-to-1 and paid $114.60. The trainer has been around since the early 1980s, on the east coast, but doesn't send out too many horses.
  • Luca Panici hasn't ridden much this meet. He did bring 51-to-1 and 40-to-1 shots into third place in two rides today. Exotic players perhaps with "all" in trifectas appreciate those results. Both times Ryan Walsh trained. He does Presque Isle mostly and Tampa Bay secondarily to my knowledge.
  • Paco Lopez returned to racing after a 30-day suspension and won once.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr., who is the meet;s winningest rider, had a natural hat trick and a 3-win day.
  • Paco Lopez, who returned from a 30-day suspension yesterday, won three times.
  • Race 1: Only $69 was bet on the roulette gimmick in a race that neared $800,000 bet.
  • Race 4: Paco Lopez withstood an objection by rider Nik Juarez who seemed to initiate the bumping; Juarez himself is due to be suspended five days for an unrelated ride.

  • Race 6: Over $382,000 was added to the Rainbow 6 pool which elevated the bet to $1.3 million. Over $1,000,000 was bet in the race.
  • Race 8: As mentioned in yesterday's review, if John Velazquez has one mount and it is late in the day, strongly consider him. He had this one ride all day and nearly wired the field on board a 13-to-1 shot, sent off 33-to-1 in his most recent outing, who was caught at the wire by Uhtred (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Christophe Clement). The runner up paid $15.60 and $10.20, almost implausible for a Velazquez mount. The Irad-Johnny V. exacta paid over $250, a rarity and gift for those two skilled athletes. The $1 super paid over $35,000.

  • Race 10: A 10-to-1 shot caught the even money favorite at the wire.

--------------
John Velazquez and Javier Castellano both have travel days Friday from Gulfstream to Aqueduct. Both are in the Gotham Stakes on Friday.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Jose Lezcano rode three winners with three mounts, two for Linda Rice.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Weather: Falling snow was visible.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez each won thrice. They are the winningest riders at the meet.
  • Joe Bravo won his only ride of the day and at 7-to-1.
  • Race 1: Nearly $1 million bet on the race and only $38 on the roulette bet.
  • Race 6: Over $378,000 was added to the Rainbow 6 pool which exceeded $1.4 million. More than $1.3 million was bet on the race but only $91 on the roulette gimmick.
  • Race 8: Danny Gargan trained winners at Aqueduct and Gulfstream roughly five minutes apart.
  • Race 11: No one hit the Rainbow Six which will start at $1.1 million tomorrow.
  • Handle: Over $9.4 million wagered.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Race 6: A couple of bombers topped the ticket including a dead heat for second. The prices would have been higher if not for the dead heat. The $2 tri returned over $4,800.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • McLean Robertson won with both his starters. He has won 4 of his last 5. A good trainer, one of my favorites who is based in Minnesota. Like last year, it took him a while to get where I thought he would reach at the meet: he is at 20% winners.
  • David Cohen hit the board with all four starters and has done so with 20 of his last 24 mounts. He is having a fantastic meet. In one win for McLean Robertson, his mount kicked it up a notch in the stretch and obliterated the challengers.
  • Race 1: Finished 10-9-8. The title of an obscure song from the 1980's, too.
  • Race 5: All About Ashley (David Cohen/Karl Broberg) finally broke his maiden at the track in his 10th try. He did have five place finishes in 9 prior starts at Oaklawn. He was sent off the favorite. The 7-year-old gelding won for the 10th time in his 46th start. The hot connections include owner M and M Racing who is mainly in New York and Arkansas. If you see that outfit, give it a second look especially at Oaklawn.
  • Weather report: Foggy, foggy and more more fog.

Picks for the Derby preps:
  • 3+6 in the Gotham Stakes
  • 10 in the Jeff Ruby Steaks
  • 5+7 in the Tampa Bay Derby
In the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway, there should be value. Fun Finder (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Kenny McPeek) at 10-to-1 could be a prime option.

I put 20 on the nose of Haikal . I watched the replays of the horses last two races and said to myself, that horse don't quit running. Reminded me of Silver Charm. So anyhoo finished up even for the day. Next.

That seemed to be the astute pick of the day for many. Good job. Fun Finder (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Kenny McPeek) was my pick of the day, finished second in the Bourbonette Oaksat 9-to-1 losing to the 2-to-1 favorite.

Bob Baffert has sent Game Winner and Improbable, almost universally accepted right now as his top three year old colts, to Arkansas. The early indication is that the Rebel could be split into two divisions in what is an unprecedented move in order to assist with cancellation of racing in southern Cal. I suppose confirmation will come in the next 24-48 hours. But the list of possible runners is below.

D1VRy7mUYAAriR-.jpg

D1VRiuWUcAAZr-X.jpg

From the Oaklawn Park Media Team:

In an unprecedented move, the Oaklawn Jockey Club announced today that it stands ready to split the $1 million Rebel Stakes on Saturday, March 16.

The announcement came just hours after Santa Anita racetrack in California announced it is suspending racing indefinitely due to poor weather and track conditions. The Santa Anita suspension has the potential to upend traditional West Coast prep races for the Kentucky Derby.

If the Rebel is split, each division will carry a purse of $750,000, and each division will offer 63.75 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby.

In making the announcement, Oaklawn President Louis Cella said he hopes the situation in California resolves itself quickly, precluding any reason to split the Rebel. “But if that is not the case, Oaklawn stands ready to help horsemen around the country,” said Cella.

Cella added, “From a financial standpoint, splitting the race makes no sense whatsoever. If we split it, it will be strictly on the basis of sportsmanship and what is best for the sport and best for top three year olds trying to get to Kentucky.”

Cella said both divisions of the Rebel would need to attract a minimum of ten runners in order to justify the split.
According to Oaklawn general manager Wayne Smith, track officials were on the phone all day Wednesday with horsemen around the country. “Plus we reached out to Arkansas Racing Chairman Alex Lieblong and to Bill Walmsley, president of the Arkansas division of the HBPA. Both gentlemen were completely supportive of our offer.”

If the Rebel is split, it will be first time in American racing history for a million dollar race to be split and run in two divisions.

  • Winning riders: Four jockeys won the first 12 races. It wasn't until the finale that someone other than Paco Lopez (4), Nik Juarez (3), Luis Saez (3) or Miguel Vazquez (2) was the victorious rider.
  • Handle: $14,000,000.
Turfway (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: Somelikeithotbrown (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the Jeff Ruby Steaks, a Kentucky Derby prep race.

  • Rafael Bejarano and Wesley Ward combined to go a perfect 3-for-3 and won three stakes races.

That Gotham Stakes race was awesome. I don't post here much but I really appreciate all your posts. You're my go to for keeping up on horse racing.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Manny Franco, the meet's top rider, won five times.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Kelsi Harr, the rider with four lifetime wins, gave a cuddly response to her winning mount. She rode for her fiancée Robert Cline. Harr's reaction was precious. Too often in society the negative gets elevated and at times that is necessary but her cute reaction with the horse is something that shouldn't go unnoticed. Many jockeys react business-like after a win but that is expected when one wins so often but... it is obvious she cherished the moment and her mount.

Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $27,000.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione was off his mounts and replacement riders won consecutive races beginning with the fifth.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. apparently began his 5-day suspension.
  • Rainbow Six: This has potential to be large if not hit prior to the weekend.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Race 6: Larry Jones' specialty is fillies. A first time starter won and paid $36.20. Lobby Knows was ridden by Gabriel Saez, Jones' top rider.
Sam Houston (Texas):
  • Thank Ya Jesus snapped a 12-race losing streak at 8-to-1. The 4-year-old Oklahoman is a June-bred which is rare in the U.S.A.
