It feels like the night before Christmas. Lol:nod:

It is not as engaging as some prior Breeders' Cups and perhaps lacks a central figure (Chrome, Gun Runner, Pharoah, etc.) but the depth of the fields is mesmerizing. I hope the rains subside and the track plays to true form. I like the concept of "Futures Friday" to separate the 2-year-olds. It makes for a consistent rather than disjointed card. Should be fun. Good luck to all who embark on wagering.

Churchill Downs was sloppy today. It appears Friday will have spotty showers while Saturday will be sunny.

The hot riders at Churchill entering tomorrow are Brian Hernandez, Jr., Florent Geroux, Jose Ortiz and Albin Jimenez.

SCRATCHES for both Breeders' Cup cards at #ChurchillDowns

There are a combined five main-body SCRATCHES just announced by the Churchill Downs stewards for the 14 Breeders' Cup races to be run here today and tomorrow, the most notable being POLYDREAM, the M/L favorite for the BC Mile tomorrow; SHANG SHANG SHANG (5-1 M/L in the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint); and CODE OF HONOR (5-1 in the BC Juvenile).

Here is the full list of early SCR:

FRIDAY: R2-(1); R5-(7, 14, 15, 16); R6-(15, 16); R8-(15, 16); R9-(11).

SATURDAY: R1-(3, 4); R2-(1); R3-(15); R4-(15); R5-(5); R8-(4, 9) (both AEs run); R11-(15, 16).

The main track is currently muddy (but harrowed) and could be fast by Friday first post of 12:55 ET. The first BC race (R5) goes at 3:21. Yet to see a rating for the turf course but surely it will be soft.

Had a bunch of horses basically hit the wall down the stretch. Finally nosed out the 7 in the last half furlong

Aqueduct (New York):

  • Opening day: The meet opened today.
  • Luis Saez, Eric Cancel and Rajiv Maragh got off to quick starts with two wins apiece today.
  • Junior Alvarado was 7 0-2-3. He had good horses but failed to win today though he figured in exotics.
  • Race 7: No Dozing (Daniel Centeno/Arnaud Delacour) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Bold Ruler. The connections are not locals.
  • Race 9: Oxy Lady (Declan Cannon/Jack Sisterson) pulled a shocker and won the Grade 3 $150,000 Tempted. The winner paid $75.00 at 36-to-1. The jockey is from Ireland and rode mainly overseas until about three years ago but generally rides in the center part of the U.S. The young trainer was an assistant to Todd Pletcher along others. The connections are not locals. The two biggest races of the day were won by outsiders.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 2: Ashley Castrenze won with her only starter and for Irish trainer Jeremiah O'Dwyer. The duo have recently paired and seem to have good numbers. When Ashley Castrenze wins, the world is a happier place.
  • Race 3: Tais Lyapustina rode a 16-length winner and yes it could have been more. The rider won her first pro race earlier this year. She is a native of Russia but raised in Maryland.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $51,000.
  • Jomar Torres and Claudio Gonzalez won both races in which they teamed. They won earlier this week at Parx and now have a three-race win streak entering tomorrow. The rider is 34 12-2-2 (35% wins) while the trainer leads the meet.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Breeders' Cup: Races 5 through 9 were part of the 14-race Breeders' Cup weekend.
  • Handle: Total handle on the full 10-race card was $52.2 million. It was the fourth-highest handle for a Friday card since the event was split into two days in 2007. On track handle was $7.25 million The handle for the five Breeders' Cup races exceeded $38,000,000 which was a 21% increase from 2017.
  • Attendance: 42,249.
  • Joel Rosario won three graded stakes races among his six starts. He was the star of the day.
  • Bob Baffert won twice. Rumor has it he may be a decent trainer.
  • Race 2: Jack Van Berg (Jon Court/Thomas Van Berg), who was in the far outside, won at 14-to-1. The horse, named after the Hall-of-Fame trainer who died less than a year ago and who was trained by Jack's son, entered with two lifetime losses at Emerald Downs (Washington). A great story.
  • Race 3: Trainer Thomas Van Berg won again. The all-Van Berg double paid $972.60. A great story got better.
That's two wins in a row for trainer Thomas Van Berg, who came into today 6-147 wins at Churchill in races dating to 1999. Had 3 total winners here since 2003. Source: Marcus Hersh
  • Race 4: Improbable (Drayden van Dyke/Bob Baffert) won the $100,000 Street Sense Stakes which was not part of the Breeders' Cup day; however, this 2-year-old colt could be headed for much bigger things.
improbable11-2cg_700-678x381.jpg
  • Race 5: Bulletin (Javier Castellano/Todd Pletcher) wired the field of 12 in the inaugural $1,000,000 Juvenile Turf Sprint. She is 2 2-0-0 lifetime. The first Breeders' Cup race of the day and the first of 14 this weekend.
  • Race 6: Newspaperofrecord (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) improved to a perfect 3 3-0-0 after dominating the $1,000,000 Fillies Turf. Good luck trying to beat her next time out. She is everything advertised and maybe more. Remember, this was an off track today.

  • Race 7: Jaywalk (Joel Rosario/Jason Servis) won the $2,000,000 Juvenile Fillies and paid $13.00. The 2-year-old improved to 5 4-1-0 with a fourth straight win. Vibrance, a Violence baby, was my bomb pick of the day and finished third at 38-to-1. The sire has been fairly successful this year. The favorite Bellafina ran fourth.
584a518ea4714be39547c5341d51e148.jpg
  • Race 8: Line of Duty (William Buick/Charles Appleby) withstood an objection/inquiry from Uncle Benny (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Jason Servis) to claim the $1,000,000 Juvenile Turf. The two colts were bet down from sizeable morning lines odds. Anthony Van Dyck, the favorite, never factored and finished ninth.

  • Race 9: Game Winner (Joel Rosario/Bob Baffert) improved to 4 4-0-0 after winning the $2,000,000 Juvenile as the even-money favorite. The winner got a head start for early chatter relating to the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Knicks Go, who came in off a 70-to-1 Grade I win at Keeneland, finished second at 40-to-1. The next two were sent off at 67-to-1 and 41-to-1 to complete a $1 super for $16,000+.

  • Race 10: Rocketry (Joel Rosario/James Jerkens) was sent off the favorite and won the 1 3/4 mile Marathon. It capped a splendid day for the jockey. The four-year-old colt made a potent move and took the lead before stretch and that was that. Rocketry improved his career mark to 16-5-3-2,
  • Graphics on the simulcast feed: A home run! Very good color combo, easy to read. Hopefully this is permanent and not something just for the Breeders' Cup. An excellent job, one that some other tracks should mimic at least partially.
Remington Park (Oklahoma):
  • Race 7: Steve Asmussen, the second winningest trainer in North America this year, finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the Clevor Trevor Stakes feature race. His longest shot of the three won at 10-to-1. Overall, he was 11 3-3-4.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: The track handled well over $11,000,000.
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 Jackpot paid out over $56,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid out over $51,000.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid out over $162,000! The $.50 Pick 4 paid out over $6,000. The $.50 Pick 3 over $1,500. The $2 double neared $1,000.
  • Race 4: The winner went off at 53-to-1 and paid $108.20. The $2 double paid over $1,500. The $2 tri paid over $7,900. The $.50 pick 3 paid out over $1,900.
  • Race 1: A $36.40 winner got the day off to a raucous start.
  • Carryover: The 20-cent Rainbow Pick 6 has a carryover of $1,068,829 on Saturday at Santa Anita. A mandatory payout awaits Sunday's closing program of the autumn meet.
