Beer League post game handshake - is it ever ok NOT to shake a guy's hand?

I just know I feel worse if some guy makes me so mad I refuse to shake his hand. At least with shaking his hand it's like you can clear your mind of the incident and take the high road.

Plus, if your team ends up winning, it's always nice to give him a shake and a "good game" because you know he's going to be pissed that he didn't get another rise out of you/someone on the team. That really pisses off the jerks :) Not much makes a statement like passing the feeling that someone doesn't mean **** to you when they're trying to get in your head.

IMO, these are your two best answers.

You guys are nuts. What if you are playing co-ed and some guy takes a cheap shot at your wife or girl, are you going to shake his hand because of some foolish and self-righteous maxim?

In our house league it's standard to shake the hands of all the players and say 'thank you' or 'good game.' But in one game I got tangled against the boards with this kid who grabbed me by the neck, shoved my head into the glass and skated away before I could retaliate (seems he didn't want to fight a girl...) I shook the dude's hand, but didn't say a damn thing! The message being: I'm willing to forgive you, but I still have no respect for you.

I've never skipped out on a hand shake. There has been one instance where I would have, but I was stuck on the bench cause my knee was all sorts of messed up.

If it's just the guys being a dick then I don't say "Good game" but still shake his hand. Even that doesn't happen to often. I don't know where you guys play that have all these psychopaths.

I always do the handshake line, but with a glove on because there is no reason to subject myself to that many germs.

There is one guy who I would have skipped the handshake/fist pump with, he tries to be an agitator in a rec league and it is just ridiculous (who in their right mind puts up an elbow towards your head as you are skating to take a faceoff). Didn't end up mattering, guy was too good for the handshake line.

If a guy took a cheap shot at my wife or girl, it wouldn't matter because one of us would not make it to the post-game handshake.

If it's something so awful and terrible that you can't shake his hand, you'd better take care of business right then and there and make sure you get whatever it is that's bothering you that badly out of your system.

I guess the only time it's okay to not shake anyone's hand is if they go all Claude Lemieux on Kris Draper style of hit

Yeah, a guy crosschecked my brother in the throat once so I blockered him in the face. He got kicked out of the game and I didn't have to worry about shaking his hand. Problem solved.

If my husband decided to not shake the hand of the guy after the game was over? I'd tell him to grow up. Same as I'd tell any other guy on my team who was trying to "defend" me long after the incident. At that point it's just a pissing match between macho dudes over a woman, not a real attempt at solving anything.

Always shake hands unless there is a moron on the other team cheap shotting players. We had a game called in the 2nd period because half of the other teams players were tossed. They were all 40+ men and my teams is all 20-25. Needles to say they were a couple of head shots and hits from behind. We left without shaking hands and they called us "Classless" lolol

Indeed. I'd be shaking his head against the boards right then and there.

If they are a particularly egregious goon, sure, why not. Especially if clip players, take really bad cheap shots and run their mouth but don't have the backbone to throw down.

Yes because holding a grudge like that is for kids. If you're going to act like a pissy 5 year old old expect to get treated like a pissy 5 year old.

lol at you guys. Seriously, a "co-ed" league. I've been playing in Minnesota since I was 5 and I can't say I've ever heard of a "co-ed" league.

What? People are lying?

We have a co-ed summer league here, and I play co-ed pick up in the spring/summer, too, with a set group that's been together for years. It's a social fun thing.

lol, Can't say I've heard of it. I'm from the East Side (651), same neighborhood as the greatest coach in hockey history, Herb Brooks, and basically the center of the American hockey universe and I've never heard of this one. Maybe just not looking hard enough.

You lost me. Are girls not allowed to play open hockey or join the rec leagues in your area?

There was one time where I did not shake a guy's hand after the game, and it was because he was being a ******* and cursing at me all game, and off the ice as well at other times. I was VERY new to the game at the time, only about 6 months or so in, and could barely skate.

If a player tried that to me now, it would be a lot worse than getting skipped over in a handshake line.

Guys that don't shake hands are lesser players.

Seriously, man up and be the bigger person. Have some respect for the other team and congratulate them on the game. Not shaking hands is unsportsmanlike.

No. Men that have respect for themselves would NOT shake the hand of a guy that took runs and cheap shots at him minutes earlier.

If I know a guy is taking shots at me there is no way in hell that I am going to shake his hand after the game. I'll skate right by him and shake the hand of the next guy though.

 You can't be serious.

If a guy disrespects your gf or wife you'll still shake his hand?

Yeah, that'd go over well with your significant.

Are you still fairly young? Co-ed leagues are common in adult rec hockey. Maybe not so much at the younger levels where the goals are different.

I'm a woman, married for almost 18 years. I do not appreciate my husband going all neanderthal and "defending my honour" like I'm his possession or something. I'm an adult, and quite capable of defending myself if necessary. My husband respects me enough to let me do it, all the while supporting me.

Before anyone casts aspersions on his manhood, trust me, that's not an issue.

Young 'uns might think it makes them all manly and stuff, but in reality it just makes them a drama queen.

How is not shaking someone's hand "going all neanderthal and defending your honor"? It's simply a refusal to partake in a gesture that acknowledges that the culprit's behavior was acceptable as it was simply "part of the game".

I'm sorry, I'm not a kid anymore. If you take cheap shots at me or my teammates, its not "okay". I'm not going to just let it go, shake your hand and pretend its all fine so you can come back and do it again next time.
