Apparently we only had 21 players on the NHL roster prior to these two callups so it wouldn't matter anyway

Although I guess now they don't have to clear waivers to go back down?

Never had a head for all these rules. Blah

Once the emergency-recalled player has played in 10 NHL games under the emergency recall, he needs to clear waivers to be sent back down though:

13.5 Waiver Expiration. The rights granted under this Article to Loan a Player(s) who is otherwise required to clear Regular Waivers to a minor league club expire for any Player(s) who, after clearing Regular Waivers:

(i) is not Loaned to a minor league club, or is Recalled from a minor league club (except on emergency Recall) and remains on an NHL roster for thirty (30) days (cumulative) or plays ten (10) NHL Games (cumulative), or

(ii) is Recalled from a minor league club on emergency Recall and plays in ten (10) NHL Games (cumulative) while on emergency Recall. For purposes of clarity, games played while on regular Recall shall not count towards the ten (10) NHL Games in this subsection (ii).

One needs to remember that NHLPA is the other party in concocting up the CBA, and they don't like to see NHL veterans of 10+ games getting sent to minors if they are good enough to warrant a spot in another team's NHL roster (=would be claimed on waivers).
