^ if only the gif lasted longer you'd probably see his face say (mod edit).

Anyway, I watched the webcast - even if they released the blade holder alone for us poor guys that would be good. ;)

None of these will be available for retail for the time being. This is a special project to push the envelope and some of it will be used during the Olympics. Hopefully it'll give us some sweet protective items farther down the road though, not too concerned about skates that get lighter by 1/2 lb when they shave off over 4 lbs on the protective side.

Seems like a b.s. gimmick, frankly. Good luck catching passes the same, it'll be hard to adjust to balance wise, durability will be an issue etc.

Why? You haven't even seen the product, tried it out or heard anything about durability yet...

The pros who are literally begging Bauer to let them wear these would beg to differ.

Durability is an issue though. They apparently only can last 40 sharpenings before you have to replace the entire skate. These won't ever hit retail. It's the concept car of the hockey world.

40 sharpenings? the way some pros get sharpened (between periods, every practice...) that will be a new pair every week or so.
why would you need to replace the entire skate? it looks like the holder is riveted just like a regular skate.

You may be able to replace just the holder. But it does look like the actual steel runner is molded into the holder and it looks like there is only very minimal steel there to be used/sharpened. After all, steel is the one, single most heavy item on a skate so the less of it you can use the lighter it will become.

However, with each holder being designed specifically for the player its intended for, that makes having extras that much more difficult and expensive, even if it can be riveted to the existing boot.

Bottom line is these skates are meant to be a disposable product only to show what can be done if money is no object and to get these athletes through the Olympics. While its possible the pads and protective may be able to continue to be used after Sochi, I highly doubt Bauer will continue to support the skates due to the cost and lifespan of the holders/runners.
