Yup I'm happy with this. He really is a solid backup goalie with pretty great numbers in the NHL. Health is the concern with him but he's bounced back nicely in that department the last few months.

Just get a solid #3G for insurance purposes and I think we're fine, just have to do something about the #1G situation.

Good signing. Francouz has been an excellent backup when healthy and this creates some more cost certainty going into the deadline and offseason.

Francouz's stats this season (min. 700mins):

10-3-1 record
0.920 sv% (11th)
2.46 GAA (13th)
4.94 GSAA (18th)
0.835 HDSV% (16th)

Over the last 3 years his stats are also really solid:

31-12-5
0.922 sv% (5th)
2.46 GAA (10th)
18.8 GSAA (12th)
0.816 HDSV% (38th)

It has to be said though that he gets favourable starts, with only 2 of his starts this season coming against teams currently in playoff positions, but he does get the job done and has great stats when he plays which is all you can ask for.

Thought for sure he was gone after this season. Guess the Avs wanted a greater degree of certainty between the pipes this offseason.

I’m okay with this. He’s a good backup and it appears the Avs know what he can and can’t do. It’s a good fit, and the financial commitment is reasonable.

We will see how well this post ages in the next two years.

His health issues have definitely deflated the value of that contract. But it's great that he gets 4 million dollars and we (probably) get a very solid backup for two years.

There was no choice here. It's a good deal, but this offseason's FA goalie crop is horrible.

All things considered it's a great deal.

I thought he had starter potential before all the injuries, but he's still an above average backup.

Wow didn't see that coming. Thought they might part ways due to injury concern.

Basically the same 2 year $2M AAV deal he had before, but slightly different salaries. Great deal for when he's healthy. Hopefully he can stay that way.

Wonder if they signed him now because they think he might steal the #1 job down the stretch/in the playoffs? If they won the Cup with Franky in net he'd cost a lot more than $2M.

This was right around the same time they signed him last time too.

Wow, this kind of just came out of nowhere.

I think it’s a fair deal.

Imo, Francouz as a goalie is worth more than this, but his injury history knocks down the price a bit. I think he definitely would’ve gotten more on the open market considering Mrazek got 3.8.

It’s good business from Sakic to get one of his goaltending positions secured for next season. It gives Sakic a bit of leverage in contract negotiations with Kuemper, or other goalies, because at least they have a solid guy locked up.

As shown below there's a clear split in Francouz's numbers vs playoff teams and non-playoff teams this season which might suggest that he's more of a backup than having legit starter potential. Do take this with a pinch of salt though as the sample sizes are obviously pretty small and three of his five games against playoff teams were in relief.

Against playoff teams: 0.909 sv% and 2.78 GAA

110 saves / 121 shots = 0.909 sv%
237.4 minutes played / 60 = 3.96 GP, and 11 GA / 3.96 = 2.78 GAA

Against non-playoff teams: 0.925 sv% and 2.32 GAA

260 saves / 281 shots = 0.925 sv%
543.2 mins played / 60 = 9.05 GP, and 21 goals against / 9.05 GP = 2.32 GAA

I really like Francouz as a back-up. He's come in for Kuemper three times this season in relief (Leafs, Wild, Flames) and we've taken 5 points from those games. Not every goalie has the mentality to be able to come in cold and be effective.

I wonder what the reasoning is for front-loading his contracts. I guess it's probably to make him easier to move in a trade in the 2nd year if he continues to have injury issues.
