This.

We take Marleau's contract and Kasperi Kapanen. Buy out Marleau and he can go back to SJ or LA. We give Toronto our 2nd round pick and Mark Barberio who can be a bottom pair Dman which they desperately need.

We keep Tyson Barrie with the hopes of resigning him. If not then we will take our chances of letting him hit the market like we did with Stastny.

At the draft we take Bowen Byram with the 4th overall and 50 goal scoring LW Arthur Kaliyev 16th overall.

Colin Wilson is brought back on a 3 year deal. Pavel Francouz is brought back on a 2 year deal. Mikko Rantanen is signed for 8 years. Nemeth and Varlamov depart via free agency. Zadorov, Compher and Kerfoot sign 2 year bridge deals.

Kapanen is pencilled in next to MacKinnon at RW. Newly signed Michael Ferland is on a line with Rantanen. Jost, Compher and Kerfoot battle for the 2C position with Compher winning out.

Landeskog- Mackinnon- Kapanen
Ferland- Compher- Rantanen
Kerfoot- Jost- Wilson
Nieto- Soda- Calvert

We have some great young players in pipeline for our forward group for the future years.

C- Bowers
C- Kamanev
RW- Kaut
LW- Kaliyev

Makar - Girard
Zadorov - Barrie
Cole - EJ
Graves

And we have Byram and Timmins? for the future on our back end.

Grubauer
Francouz

Stanley cups pile in.

I generally like this plan, but have 2 main issues with it. First, I would prefer (and think we need), a better boost to the 2nd line than just Ferland. Maybe it’s not realistic that we get all our issues fixed in 1 offseason, but we really need to add a 2c in the worst way. I’d be very happy only giving up a 2nd and cash for kapanen and ferland, but think we’d need to trade 16oa, kerfoot and at maybe a decent/good prospect for an upgrade at 2c.

Second, there’s no way that Joe should allow Barrie to play out the year. Either he agrees to a contract this summer, or he gets sent to Edmonton. We know who Barrie is and what he provides. Our offer to him will likely not change between this year and next year. I refuse to have a repeat of the Stastny situation and 1 year of anybody does us no good for this team’s window.

League said they won’t turn the blind eye to such deals next time.
The big thing was Orpik going back to the Caps, but I think any prior agreements for a buyout will ring alarm bells.

Anyway I don't think a year of Marleau is a liability from an Avs perspective. He still has speed, he isn't useless on the bottom 6 and could help as a power play specialist (better than Wilson or Kerfoot).

It all hinges on getting him to agree, but this team isn't exactly a bad pitch since the other teams that can take a contract dump this big aren't thinking about contention. Hell he'd be joining a team that got further than his current one.
