It’s like cast iron. Ineffective unless properly seasoned.

Great gesture. Very common for the players to take care of these guys at the end of the year and christmas. They do a lot of the small things people don't know about or realize. They are sort of the middle ground between management and the players, so they have to balance things. And, they take care of a lot random things for the players. In many ways they are almost used as a concierge service at times. For example, when Larkin took a shot that hit the glass in warm up and knocked someones beer over, he went to equipment manager, asked him if he had 20 bucks, told him to go get that fan another beer, and he could grab a 20 from his locker.

If anyone has read The Game by Ken Dryden or Life on the Run by Bill Bradley (both account of the 70's in their respective sports) they would know what these guys mean. On an even more nefarious side, in baseball its common to tip the club house attendants who are basically concierges for the away team, and one of them was found to be the go to guy for hooking up an illegal mixture (by baseball rules) to increase grip for pitchers.
