Avalanche advertising on HF?

Just now I got an ad for an Avalanche mini-pack oriented around opening night. Kind of neat that an NHL team is targeting this forum for ticket sales. I'd imagine that only about 1% of the forum are Avs fans, but I suppose there are enough eyeballs to justify the ad.

One thing that I wondered: I was just on the Avs website a few minutes ago to check their roster, so I'm curious if I picked up a cookie or was targeted in some other way toward that specific team? Or is it just a coincidence?

Probably this. Those ads have been following me all over the internet, someone was talking about it on the Avs board too... not sure which thread off the top of my head but it's happening to other people too.

It's Google Ads. Yes, Tarheel, they are now targeting you based on your recent activity. The Avs themselves weren't, they just pay Google to use their resources to find the best targets for ad placement.

I think this is it - any time I start planning a vacation I get Best Western ads on here - and in a lot of other places - since I only stay at BW (I regularly cash out my air miles for BW gift cards, and then the BW points I get from my repeated free stays earn me more free stays)

I'm bit along the path, so stuff like this intrigues me. I read a book called "The Numerati" recently, that talked about this sort of thing-collection of information for companies to use for ads on the net, ect-it was eye opening to me how far we've come with this.

Yeah I get Devils ads on HF all the time.. At first I was clicking them cause I thought I would be supporting the campaign, but then I remembered that this is a pay-per-click campaign, so I was really just making them spend extra money lol
