Hasnt old ass Ovi won 3 Rockets in that time frame?

IDK man .. I love american born Matthews as the next great goal scorer.. hate how his fan boys have to try and bring Ovi down.

You can praise AM without having to do mental gymnastics to diss Ovi.

Saying that Matthews is ‘up there’ with Ovechkin, or that Matthews has ‘scored more goals than Ovechkin up to this point in both their careers’ isn’t ’dissing Ovi’

Everyone thinks Ovechkin is amazing, it’s just equally amazing that Matthews has been just as good.

It’s incredible, actually.

We usually need to wait a bit to have a talent on that level again

People tried to force Crosby into that Gretzky/lemieux mold but now that McDavid is here it’s clear that shoe didn’t fit crosby

Dude, this guy is claiming the Matthews has already had a better career than Ovechkin. He’s not claiming it’s possible, he’s saying it has already happened.

It isn’t possible to discuss things rationally with this level of delusion.

Some here are forcing Matthews into the Ovechkin tier just as much which has a ways to go before becoming fact.

Rethink what you just wrote. When did Ovechkin start playing? When did Mathews start playing. When were these coachs challenges implemented?

You think offsides reviews have had a bigger impact than other rule changes that have turned the league from an 87 point Art Ross winner to regularly 120+ with multiple 50-goal scorers?

Matthews is tremendous but I put players who have clearly dragged otherwise mediocre teams a notch above. Guys who outpace the rest of their team by a drastic margin like Kucherov is doing now.

The last time I saw a shot like Mathews might be Brett Hull in his prime..Maybe Ovehckin but Ovie had a tonne of goals doing that one timer from the faceoff circle.

Not really. Through 644 career goals only 92 were the patented one-timer from the left dot. And that ratio probably hasn't changed much up to where he is now. People act like half his goals are from the PP left dot.

Have the ovie conversation when hes still pacing/around ovie's numbers at age 34/35. Until then I dont think its that crazy to say hes the best goal scorer to enter the league since ovie.

That wasn’t the league that Ovechkin started playing in though. His prime was powerplay city and he had the keys to the city.

3108:10 vs. 1630:30 in their first 8 seasons

That’s why the games need to be played folks. Pace is fun, but rarely unfolds in reality as projected.

Was “on pace” for 76-77 goals over a full season through 56 team games and he still hasn’t hit 60 with 11 games remaining. If he went down with an injury with 26 games left in the season, we would have heard about a 75+ goal season halted until the end of time. Should have 66 at this point, but pace can never be trusted, unless you’re Gretzky or Lemieux, and to a lesser extent, McDavid.

The point is that Ovechkin was a great EV producer when he started in the league, contrary to what you claimed.

Matthews’ accomplishments can stand on their own merit. This obsession to prorate stats, talk about career pace and if it is static and outright discount the accomplishments of any other player mentioned is absolutely bizarre.

Never claimed he was not a great ES producer

Wat?? Your entire premise has focused on Ovechkin being the mayor of “power play city”. You haven’t mentioned a word about his EV production and when someone points out that he has, in fact, produced phenomenally at EV, you instantly shift the goalposts to “well yeah, but games played”.

It’s just dizzying the lengths you will go to to discount the accomplishments of one of the greatest goal scorers in history.

I’m going to make this super simple. Matthews MIGHT do what Ovechkin has ALREADY DONE when both their careers are over. That’s it.

I love how you're obsessed with the "MOAR PP TIME" thing and don't factor in how much easier it is overall to score nowadays than it was during most of the 2005-2015 era.

Extreme example, but think of it this way. If Player A gets 5 PP minutes per game in the dead puck era and Player B gets 3 PP minutes per game in the 1980's, are you seriously going to say that Player A had it easier because he got 2 extra minutes per game of PP time?

Ovechkin outscoring Kovalchuk and Iggy by 13 goals is way more impressive than matthews ourscoring Zach Hyman by 8 lol.
It's pretty poor to compare names like that. Hyman is having an insane year and the competition wouldn't somehow be more difficult if say, Pastrnak was the runner up.

Classic case of you don’t have to depreciate one to appreciate the other.

What Matthews is doing is otherworldly and to downplay it is just stupid.

Actually yes. Over 120 goals alone were one timers on the power play ONLY. I dont think there is any reason to make things up when it can be verified right on NHL.com

Pasternak did outscore Matthews by 20 goals last year. Who was doing that to Ovechkin in his prime?

We don't know if he's going to be an elite scorer at 34-35, longevity is a big part of why OV is considered the goat goal scorer. He's doing it in his prime, can he continue later into his career ? It is way too premature for these kinds of comments.
That is why it is called on pace. Nobody knows nothing for sure hence a thing called adjusted stats.
